Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What is meant by "the Application Server"?

While reading on the wiki I am reading the term "the Application Server" and it seems to be referring to the built-in server that comes with Alpha Five since version 6. But isn't this confusing?

In fact, this version of the AS does not allow any internet users to access your web application. For such access you need the REAL Application Server with the appropriate license.

Why does the documentation refer to this built-in version of the server as "the Application Server"? Shouldn't it be called something like the "Built-in Version of the Application Server"? or the "Development Server", or something else?

To me, the Application Server refers to the licensed version of the server that allows user access to the web applications on the server.

Is this just a case of out-dated documentation? It is confusing for us non-developers who don't quite get the whole thing. At the very least it would be helpful if the documentation made a clear distinction between the built-in "Testing" version and the "REAL" Application Server when discussing settings and configuring the directories on the server.

Can we make an updated entry in the wiki to make it clear that BOTH versions of the server must be properly setup when both versions are on the same machine?

The "built-in Testing version" IS the "REAL Application Server", just hosted within Alpha Five. You can do everything that the stand-alone server can do. So what you refer to the "real" server is Alpha Five with the development environment removed. The documentation tends to make no differentiation between the two programs because almost no difference exists.

The server, when run from within Alpha Five, can do everything the stand-alone server does, including user access to your application if you have installed your license there.

Re: What is meant by "the Application Server"?

      Thank you again Lenny.

So, as I understand you I did NOT need to install the Application Server package on my server machine since this machine already has the full developer version installed. I did not know that.

Is there an advantage to me re-doing my installation or should I just leave it as is? I believe I have two separate installations of the server installed. Or maybe it's two separate licenses on the same machine? At any rate, I currently need to use the settings page of BOTH versions to get the right results. Not what I expected but now that I know what to do I can live with it.

I thought there was a 30-minute auto time-out on the development version preventing using it for a live website? If that is no longer true, then we can save ourselves the cost of at least one WAS license.

You still need a license. But putting your license in Alpha Five or the stand-alone server will give you identical functionality. Without a license, either one will give you just the demo mode.

Suppose one buys an unlimited user license for A9 Version of application server and then migarate to Version 10 then that unlimited license is no longer capable of hosting the 10 version or for that matter any future versions, right?

                Licenses are version-specific.

                  I see. But
the webserver that comes with the software allows to develop and deploy in the local machine unless you buy separate license. When you are developing for your intranet, say for few people, I do not want to spend extra money. If only Alphafive has a situation like Filemaker has, where five people can access with the supplied server and if they need more then they can shell out the extra cash.
