The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Since I have never attempted a web based application before, -

    - and I wonder if you guys could just tell me this?

    I am looking for a training manual, but as a starter, I would really appreciate your comments.

    I have Alpha 5 version 9 platinum edition, and unlimited runtime, and I want to make a web based database (to be hosted by an online company) that will allow multiple sellers to post items for sale in a similar way to Ebay. And then for buyers to login and choose items they want,

    (In this case there will not be any actual monetary transactions on the web site, that will be done elsewhere.)

    My question is, Is my version of Alpha 5 capable of the necessary programming to develop an "e business" site like this, and can I upload it to a host when completed, and do I need to buy a license, or additional software.

    As you may begin to see I have no idea how to achieve this yet, but I wanted to know if it is possible in principle before I set out,

    I have looked for this information, but either I am not understanding the technical terminology, or this type of project it not covered in any thing I have read so far.

    I am not asking for anyone to spend valuable leading me along, I just want to ask if it can be done in principle, so I do not spend too much time on what may be a non-viable project. or at least too difficult for me.

    If you don't already have one, you will need a v9 WAS license. Trouble is, I don't know if Alpha still sells them.

    As far as eBay like site goes, you probably will want to go w. SQL backend. DBF may be problematic w. heavy use.

    If you really are going to go to all that trouble, I would recommend v10 - it's light years ahead of v9 on the web side.

      If you want to integrate some non-store information with the store you build in Alpha, that's one thing. But if you want just a store, something "like eBay", and you don't have any web building experience, it is going to take awhile to get it programmed. If ALL you need is a store like eBay, find a 3rd party shopping cart either as a hosted solution (they host it) or something you buy off the shelf and install on your web server.

      An Alpha store is going to cost you $599 for the Alpha web server software and minimum of $50/month for the server hardware plus whatever time it takes you to build the application.

        In version 8, Alpha had an ecommerce package they sold and I got it as a package. I have never opened it yet and somewhere on this forum I saw reference to it. I kinda remember it having a store built in.

        Memory over a few years can be rough at 64, so don't get upset if I am wrong.

        You might look at www.thefreecountry.com for a free store(open source).

        I am not sure which is best for your needs.

        I trotally agree moving to version 10 would be a great move and maybe version 11 as soon as it comes out. This is going by what has been said about 11 so far.

          ok guys, thanks for the feedback, so last question arising from your comments, if I go get V10, then I will be able to set something up, without a further need for licenses or ad-dons? If so, I will look at the DaveM sites but likely buy V10 in the end.
          I love a challenge, so long as I know my own knowledge or lack of it is the only constraint.

            You will need a web app server license in addition to the developer.

              And you can depend on the people here on the forum to help you. They sure have helped me on here.

              The app server license can only be used one time, so make sure it is where you want it before you use your license number. Note that if you move it you have to talk to Alpha to do so.

                Ok all understood with many thanks. Makes it a little little daunting. Well I will think hard and act slowly and research widely, then decide, fame or safety.
                On balance it does seem more of a challenge than I had expected, but I thank you all for your time and input, and will let you know if/when I embark on it.

                  Danny,

                  Go for it. It is worth the effort.

                  You can make a website in just about anything and port it to alpha. Make a page with a grid to access whatever datasbase you have or want to build and then more and more and more. It really is not that hard.
