Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FILTERS field to field compare

    Can someone help with this basic question regarding "filters" I've tried queries, sets, joins, all seem to follow same constuct.

    I have limited experience using A5, and am just getting my feet wet. I'm trying to use a filter to compare fields having unique names within a 'SET' of two related tables. For example, table1->A_score to table2->B_score. I realize the genie appears to allow compares using a field from the parent table to a 'constant', a 'value' or a 'run time prompt. None of these satisfy my requirement (compare fields between two tables) Is this possible???

    Any help will be appreciated.

    table1->A_score to table2->B_score
    How are these two fields related? Do you mean you have some sort of id field in each table and you want to compare the table1->a_score for a given id to the table2->b_score for the same id?

    A set linked on the id field should allow you to browse both scores or cteate a smiple report to do so.
    There can be only one.

      Yes, another field will link the two tables, then I hoped the child table could be filtered based on the relationship between another similar filed (... score) from each table.

        A set linked on the id field should allow you to browse both scores or create a simple report to do so. You can filter a set on child field in a one to one link.

          I tried this (using the one on one) relation and didn't see a difference from using the one to many approach. While in design mode the filter builder allows building a 'condition' consisting of a FIELD, a relationship and a VALUE. The value drop down, supports four options: 1)select an existing value, 2)specify a value now value, 3) specify a variable ...., and 4) prompt at runtime. None of these allows for specifying a 'field name) from the parent/child table to be used for the condition. This is my delema ... how to use the table field for comparison of the two table values?????

            Design mode of what?

            My thought was that you might want to build a report (on the one to one set) using the filter

            table1->A_score <> table2->B_score

            and show both A_score and B_score on the report.

            I haven't seen anything you've posted that indicates what "comparison" you want.

              Re: FILTERS field to field compare

              The fields are 'A_SCORE'(in table1) AND 'B_SCORE' (in table2)

              For discussion sake, I'm referring to building a 'SET', using a filter and viewing the results as a default browse.

              I can't get past the 'filter' option, where you would specify the fields to compare.

              Hope this helps, thanks for your patience

                Re: FILTERS field to field compare

                I don't build sets with filtered links. I build sets where I have a linking field. I view the default browse or create a saved browse. While viewing a browse I use query by expression quite a bit. (any query method filters the viewed records)

                I'll try to create a sample and attach it here.

                  That works, thank you, I realize this isn't easy solving problems by messaging. Your method worked (filter by expression), my problem involved the genie/wizard which didn't clearly indicate you can use a 'field name' as the second value in an expression ( field <> field)

                  thanks, again
