Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Adv button in dialog component

This new tabbed dialog capability is great! See the attached picture for one I am working on.

I put an advanced button in the dialog to copy the mailing information to the shipping fields, but my question is the timing of events. The screen states that the server event occurs after the form is submitted, so I don't think I can display the copied items on the form, but does the button event occur before or after the form's AfterValidate event?

If it is before, then I will copy variable to variable. If it is after, then I need to copy table field to table field...

Or, maybe there's a better way?

RE: Adv button in dialog component

Me again... I found another place where it described the onclick event of the advanced button as firing before the validation, so I programmed it to copy the local variables.

It works! ...if you have patience. There are still two problems I would like to resolve,

    1. It takes 65 seconds for the page to open initially, but after pressing the advanced button which copies the values of 8 local variables to 8 others, it takes 5 minutes to reopen. Something is hanging up the process which takes away the time savings of having the button!

    2. The repainted screen revents back to the first tab. How can I redisplay the tab the button is on (say tab 3, 4 or 5?)

    Thanks,
    Pat

Here's an idea. I noticed that during the extended repaint time, I am seeing the disk light flash. Then, afterwards, the web server takes an extended time to turn off.

So, maybe there are a large number of variables being written to the hard disk?

RE: Adv button in dialog component

Just guessing now, but since there is no defined field width in the dialog, perhaps it is searching through all the fields in my table to determine the field widths to display.

If that's the case, I'd much rather set the field widths manually in exchange for more speed!

Did this speed issue get resolved?

            Not by me.

I took the button out and let the user retype the information manually.

The AfterValidate event is the last event to fire.

Ideally you would want your button to execute client side JavaScript so that the field values get copied without having to submit the dialog. This is actually easier to do than you might think. You could just put the necessary html in a free form edit region in the dialog. The button's onClick event would execute the Javascript to set the value in the target fields.
