Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Misleading Genie: convert case of fields

    Select capitalization option:

    "Uppercase the first character of each word"
    (quick brown fox->Quick Brown Fox)

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    It would have saved me an hour of frustration
    if the option included the warning:

    "(QUICK BROWN FOX remains QUICK BROWN FOX)"

    first convert all letters to lower case before counting on
    this option to do anything.

    Sorry, I responded for the desktop.

    Paul,

    Selecting Field Properties, Format of a character field on a form while in design mode and selecting Format Style displays:

    none
    UPPERCASE
    lowercase
    First letter uppercase (rest of string unchanged)
    First Letter of Word Uppercase (rest of word unchanged)
    First letter uppercase, rest lowercase
    First Letter of Word Uppercase, Rest Lowercase

    If you select Tables/Sets, Edit Field Rules..., Transformations while on the CP, you get the Case convert options of:

    None
    Upper (G. wasHington)-> G. WASHINGTON)
    Lower (G. wasHington)-> g. washington)
    First (G. wasHington)-> G. wasHington)
    Word (G. wasHington)-> G. WasHington)
    Low & First (G. wasHington)-> G. washington)
    Low & Word (G. wasHington)-> G. Washington)

    Where do you find the "Uppercase the first character of each word" rule you mention?

      I hope this works - I'm trying to include a screen capture. At any rate I was referring to the screen one arrives at by creating a new operation and selecting the second option: "covert case of fields". After filling in the genie one reaches the screen:

      I don't think that I'm that different from most people in that when I find the choice one I'm looking for I select it. The fourth option is exactly what I wanted: uppercase the first character of each word. No matter how many times I tried it, it didn't produce the results indicated - the case remained exactly as it was before I ran the operation.

      The problem was I was trying to convert text written in all caps and this option only works for lower case. Granted the example below used "a quick brown fox", but that's awfully subtle.

      The selection of the correct button (#6) could have been made much more obvious with a little tweaking of the text of #4: ("only works with all lower case").

        Paul,

        I understand what you are saying, but the explanation under each of the radio option buttons seems to be pretty self-explanatory to me.

        I guess the problem lies in how one interprets the explanation.

          Did you never have one of those tests where they tell you to read all questions before starting to answer?

            Bob,

            When I taught in college, we used to joke about using that at the beginning of an exam, but we were too afraid of the results to ever try it.
