Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    moving server

    Hello Everyone.

When I first got the Web Application software, I downloaded it on to my desktop computer. I ran the server from the desktop, which can be slow when several users are on it and updating tables. Today, I got a new file sharing server. I would like to run the web application server fuctions through it, while still keeping the Alpha V application on my desktop. Is it as easy as going into the Web Application Server Control Panel and changing the server name and document root?

I do not want to download any software on this server, as I have had trouble with doing that in the past. But, I am looking to increasing the effectiveness of the Web Application Sever. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Drew

You must install the Web Application Server on your server system. Without it installed, your server has no way of providing the service you want it to.

You must also deactivate the license on your desktop before activation will be allowe don the new serevr.

Thanks for you help. I was afraid that would be the answer. I am reluctant to download any new software on this server. I have done it in the past with disasterous results....

How about this - I have got two machines on my desk; a desktop computer and a server. The applications are on the desktop, but the data and the document root are on the server. The main table that the staff searches through and updates (using the web application server) has over 200,000 records in it. Some searches take over a minute to complete. The desktop is really good (3.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM). Is there any way to speed up the searches?

If you want to optimize performance, you need to have everything on a single server. With your current setup, the process looks something like

        1) desktop recieves a request
        2) desktop connects to server to read in A5W page
        3) desktop begins processing xbasic
        4) desktop connects to server again to retrieve data. The server sends the complete tables to the desktop for any searching
        5) desktop completes page processing
        6) result is sent back to client

There is a whole bunch of extra network traffic there that is not helping you at all. Even on a dedicated network, the speed of network access is MUCH slower than accessing a local disk.

I am curious as to the problems you have experienced in the past downloading software to your server. Are referring to exposing your server to the internet or actually have problems when you download software?

Once again, thanks for the help...

As for downloading software to the server, here is the issue -

The server is configured as a file sharing server. It runs Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Service Pack 1. I tried installing Microsoft SQL Server, but put in the wrong disk (my mistake). The disk that I put in was for Microsoft Exchange. Even after I backed out all of the Exchange software, the server would not keep any of its network connections. I was told that it was some kind of security protocol within Server 2003. The server had to be reconfigured, all of the desktops had to be remapped, etc. So, I am not sure I want to download the Web Application Server program on the server.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

            Thanks,

            Drew
