Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Path/alias problems publishing application

I'm having a difficult time publishing my web application to the proper directories using FTP. I've searched the forums and read the helpdocs repeatedly, but all I've done is become more confused.

The application published with no problem on my development machine and both static preview and live preview work correctly. It consists of only a table data grid with a search component.

All of the files are actually published to the webserver's webroot directory - both application and the data base itself. But I cannot get the data base files into the proper directory or provide the correct path for the browser to find the detail section. I've tried creating the /DSL_DB_Pub directory manually, but that hasn't helped.

I've tried numerous iterations (along with a few incantations) of what I thought were logical choices for the alias/path requirements. But these efforts have been unsuccessful in getting the detail section of the grid to appear in the browser. The search component displays fine, but for the detail portion showing the data grid I get an error 3 saying the path cannot be found.

My development machine has the A5v7 files located at C:\AlphaData\DSL_DB_Data\DSL_Data.adb.

My target web server is running A5v7WebServer, with the path to the webroot as D:\A5Webroot\.

I want the end result to be the application files in D:\A5Webroot\ with the data base files located in D:\Webroot\DSL_DB_Pub\.

On the local Webroot alias I have [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = =a5.get_path(). My understanding is that this entry extracts the path to the local data base files, and passes it to the published files.

What I'm not understanding is the required "[PathAlias.ADB_Path] =" entry required for the web publishing profile. I thought it would likely be "\" for the Webroot, or "\DSL_DB_Pub\" or "\DSL_DB_Pub" (w/o trailing slash).

I've set the destination folder for the data base files on the web server profile to "\", "\DSL_DB_Pub" and various other guesses.

What should be the entry for the [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = on the webserver profile?

What should the entry for the Data Base files folder be on the webserver profile to have the files published to the \DSL_DB_Pub directory beneath the webroot?

Many thanks for any assistance on this matter. I know I'm probably overlooking several big elephants in the living room, but I just haven't connected on this answer.

    Re: Path/alias problems publishing application

    Alias: [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = D:\A5Webroot\DSL_DB_Pub
    FTP Address: //yourservername or IP
Your FTP Username has to point to the A5Webroot folder
The FTP Folder name would be blank
The Publish Database files folder would be just DSL_DB_Pub

In your post you said you wanted the data in D:\Webroot\DSL_DB_Pub\, but I think that was a typo and you meant ...A5Webroot...

Also, over on the server you want the Document Root to be D:\A5Webroot. I think that's what your notes say you have.

Having said the above, in a real production environment, you don't want your database files under the webroot. This allows anyone to type in the URL that points to one of your DBF files and open it directly. I normally create the FTP to point one level above the A5Webroot (e.g. D:\A5) so I can publish both the web files (e.g: to D:\A5\A5Webroot) and the data files (e.g. to D:\A5\Data).

      Re: Path/alias problems publishing application

Thanks Steve for the respose. I've been working on rebuilding the ftp server and my directory structure as you suggested.

I'll let you know how things come out.

      Again, I appreciate the assistance.
