Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mac Compatability

I love the Alpha databases. I was able to design a very nice database program for my wife's computer with it. And I am no programmer by any means. However, we are increasingly frustrated with our PC's. The only reason we have not gone over to Apple is because there is not a compatabile version of Alpha Software for Apples. I realize thisc would be a major undrtaking, but with the ever increasing Apple users around I'm sure it would be profitable. Does any one know of any plans of Alpha ssoftware to come up with a database program that would run across both platforms?

The answer is ........YES (qualified a bit):).

With Alpha Five's version 10's features, it is even easier than ever to create a browser based database application that will work on any browser based system (whether a Mac, IPhone, Game System etc.)

The development still needs to be done on a PC (or a PC emulator) under windows, but that can be done on a Mac. The Web application server will still have to run under Windows (or emulator), but the database can be anywhere, including an SQL server.

However, running natively in a Mac OS probably would not happen, certainly not before a Linux version, and there are many issues they would have to address in the UI. I know, Alpha has tried to make a large part of their code, system independent, but it needs to be 100% that way, and that is a very daunting task.

I run Alpha (V9) on a Mac using Parallels. Works great, no problems. I have not tried V10 yet, but so far I have not had anything not run under Parallels. Works fine in a mixed environment as well (windows network & macs)

          Barbara

I have been developing software for PC's since the early 80's. Until about 3 years ago, all my development work was done on a PC - primarily IBM Thinkpads. While I still think the Thinkpads are one of the best PC's available, I decided to try running Windows on a Macbook Pro using Parallels. I was flabbergasted. Not only did it run every Windows software program without a hitch, it was hands down the best computer I ever used that ran Windows.

I've upgraded my Apple hardware two or three times since my original Mac and that brings me to one of the hidden benefits of running Windows in Parallels. You can literally copy your virtual machine (that's what they call your installed copy of Windows) to an external hard drive and then copy to your new Mac and you don't have to re-install your Windows apps all over again. You can also use Apple's migration assistant with the proper cable and it will literally copy all your apps from your old Mac to your new one. That includes Parallels and your virtual machine.

BTW, for compatibility testing, we often have to run our apps on various versions of Windows. Using Parallels, I can run XP, Vista, and soon, Win7 all on one computer.

If you think this sounds too techie for you, think again. It's really pretty simple to setup. And, you get to enjoy OS X and all it's benefits while still being able to develop in Windows.

Off thread a little, but why Parallels and not VMware's Fusion?

or just the full VMWare? Same thing with the multiple OS's and the ability to save each virtual machine and restore without reinstall - the way it should be.

PS. Another really great thing is to create a separate VM (virtual machine) to do all your browsing and email in. Get a virus... reinstall your backup and the virus is gone.

No particular reason for Parallels. It was bundled with the system, it works great never looked further...

The implication is that you are using the desktop version and not the web version. So no, there was no mention of moving Alpha to the Mac at the conference.

The web version is what v10 is about. If you want to manage a web server to access your apps, that runs on Windows.

There was discussion about the core code and Alpha's efforts to move it to .net (Windows). There is a similar project by Novell (mono) that may someday move the program to Linux. But Apple is yet different -- and closed.

The solution is an emulator on the Mac. If you have a few apps that you can't live without then that is your solution.

I am running Windows 7 and it is a breath of fresh air. I've been on the RC and recently received my RTM license. Where there was great resistance to moving to Vista, we expect a large percentage will move to Windows 7. Whether or not it is as good or better than a Mac, I'll leave to others.

I do see some number of Mac's (and Linux) in the wild but it doesn't change the fact that 90% of the market is Windows. Mac has had Filemaker for many years. I assume that it is still available. If you are intent on working on the Mac, that is probably your best choice.

                    Re: Mac Compatability

I WAS an avid windows user since it's inception. Only a few years ago did I even begin using a mac and only reluctantly because of Design work.
Last year I purchased a big macbook pro.
I run VMWARE on it and have XP pro, Vista Ultimate and now Win7 all installed on it. I use the Mac for design, XP has my outlook email and a few older apps I still love and don't work on Vista (not tried win7).
I have alpha Five v10 installed NOW on the win7 Virtual machine.
I trialed v10 on all (xp, Vista and Win7)

In relation to running virtual drives for each operating system....I would never go back!

The mac ROCKS. It's super fast. and to run 2-3 screens each with a seperate operating system, partitioned hard drives etc... and Sharing files between them seamlessly! all I can say is WOW!

                      Re: Mac Compatability

I am developing on a Win XP laptop and publishing to a Win XP virtual machine running on a Mac mini. Total transparency and the server screams! Even with my relatively slow DSL uplink from the A5 WAS, performance using a database of more than 8,000 records is quite acceptable. Because the client wants total Mac hardware, this approach allows the client to get by with only one copy of VMware fusion and Windows (for the server). Previously, I used Access, which required every Mac to also run Fusion and Windows.

one of my clients is trying to install V10 on a mac with parallels - and although it installs, when you try to run it, you get an aeeror message - something is blocking one or more of the files from installing - anyone have any ideas?
