Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Re: How about a release?

As far as other alternatives go, I think I will go with Filemaker. Oh wait a minute. The full price for Filemaker turns out to be a bit more than the Alpha V10 All in One Bundle, which I was told will retail for $1199 full version price and $899 if you own a previous version.

To get much less functionality, you will need to purchase FileMaker Pro Advanced for $499 and Filemaker Server Advanced for $2999.

I think I will keep using Alpha V10 and save $2600, as well as countless hours trying to code what is built in to Alpha V10.

As far as the documentation goes, it can be much better. But so can the documentation on EVERY Microsoft product including the OS'es, and almost every other vendor's offerings. Yes I would like to have a hard copy, and that is why I print the helpfile after turning it into a PDF using a product called CHMMagic. This program turns any CHM Help file into a fully indexed active link PDF file.

At least with Alpha, if I get stuck, I can always post to this message board and get an almost immediate response from some of the most helpful people I have never met.

I have been using Alpha since the DOS days and I will continue with V10 and then probably V11 when that ships. Each version has been an incremental advance, and V10 really seems to go above and beyond. Yes most things are done with no code needed, but to get the most, it seems I will have to learn the basics of JavaScript. That is why I have been reading up on HTML Programming and JavaScript while waiting for V10's release.

The original question on this thread . . . How about a release?

            Yesterday's email broadcast from Alpha:

            So . . . today's the day . . .

There are people who buy stuff and never use it because it is just a little beyond their capabilities. .
So what if they refund a few extra bucks? The question is: Will the information gained outweigh the refund amount? If the survey is written correctly, one should be able to elicite beneficial information. I would think Alpha would want to know why someone bought their product and decided not to use it.

For PR, any refunds would certainly give the message that Alpha wants happy, satisfied customers. I see it as a win, win for Alpha.
