Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Real random strings

This has probably been posted before, but I can't find it.

I've tried using rand_string() to generate two random characters, but every time I run it, I get "OF" ... not random enough for my purposes!

So is there a way to get actual random characters?

    Maybe a v10 bug?

    V5 and V8 don't repeat the string.

    Code:
    ? rand_string(2)
    = "yh"
    ? rand_string(2)
    = "nz"

    ? rand_string(2)
    = "rc"

    ? rand_string(2)
    = "si"

    ? rand_string(2)
    = "xm"
    There can be only one.

      V9 with V10 beta gives

      Code:
      ? rand_string(2)
      = "im"

      ? rand_string(2)
      = "ld"

      ? rand_string(2)
      = "qv"

      ? rand_string(2)
      = "wr"
      in the interactive window.

        V10 full release

        Code:
        ?rand_string(2)
        = "qi"

        ?rand_string(2)
        = "xj"

        ?rand_string(2)
        = "fl"

          Re: Real random strings

I'm glad to know it works in those situations; I hadn't tried them.

But, if you try it in the BeforeValidateNewRecords event of a V10 Beta grid as
          DataSubmitted.prefix = upper(rand_string(5))
          it always produces "AOFVP"

            Pat,

Many of us here in the Desktop section have no familiarity with the

            BeforeValidateNewRecords event
            There can be only one.

Pat, its probably caching the initial results and redisplaying. I have had to clear the cache after making programming changes in order to have my new code produce and display a new result. In fact, I wanted to suggest to Alpha they add a Do Not Cache option which we would turn on during development, and then off when going live.

This problem is specific to web apps. We've identified the cause and arte working on a fix.

Steve, have you seen Response.NoCache() - This is a new method that sets a number of response headers which indicate to the client, and any proxy servers, that this response should never be cached. This method simplifies previous techniques that required multiple lines of Xbasic to accomplish the same result. This is recommended for use in any page that displays sensitive data that should not remain in a client or proxy cache due to security concerns.

It wouldn't exactly be automatic for your application, but you could use an include to add/remove this on all your pages based on where you are publishing to.

                      Stan and Tom,

Don't tell the web people (just our secret), but I think you desktop people are more familiar with functions that they are, and I thought this was a function problem, not a web problem!

Lenny, thanks for checking it out so quickly.
