Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Linker in desktop

So we know its now possible to use grid components on the desktop. But can you use a grid linker on the desktop as well? How so? Thanks.

I would like to know the answer to this too.

Edit: sorry I've found how to use it now.

        Hi Mark

Here's a brief summary of the various stages:

Use Web Projects to create web component grids for Parent and Child tables - I used updateable grids for both. Then, create a grid linker web component to determine the Parent/Child link.

Edit the Parent grid Properties by ticking 'Has linkedGrids or other content', then enter the required details by clicking 'Linked content definition'.

        Hope this helps. Mike

I'm surprised that this works. The Grid Linker is basically obsolete in v10. Row expanders and tabbed linked grids are used instead as they are AJAX enabled.

It works well in my desktop application. I like the method since the child records are displayed below the parent ones rather than alongside or in a tab.

Is there a way to achieve that without a grid linker web component?

I think the Tabbed Linked Grids only use a tab if you have more than one child grid. Check out videos #10, 26, 29 & 35...

                Thanks Peter.

I'll follow your advice in case there is a trouble with grid linker that I haven't exerienced yet.

I can't understand why that might be if is still offered as a web component but I thanks for pointing me in the right direction on my first attempt at using a grid in a desktop application. It's a great feature.

                  Re: Grid Linker in desktop

I have tried Peter's suggestion using the takesgrid.a5wcmp web component in a test application. When I use this and update a master or child record I get the following error messages.

                  Error: Line 173:
Char 128, Error '$e_ue[...].0' is null or not an object, Code 0, URL a5resjavascript/a5js

                  Error: Line 25:
Char 91, Error Object doesn't support this property or method, Code 0, URL a5resjavascript/a5js

Is this a Grid Linker bug?

                    Mike,

Not sure when or where the error occurs. See attached video.

Also the term Grid Linker is commonly used to describe a web component that was available in V8 and V9 and is not ajax enabled. This Term "Grid with Linked content" is a better description of what you are using in this sample. Since you are not using a Grid Linker component in this sample, not a Grid Linker bug. But in any event, I could not see a problem. It looks like its working fine for me. (Using Build 2659/3515 V9 compatability mode off)

                      Bill

You are correct, sorry I used the wording grid linker in error.

The errors occur when a change is made to existing master or child records and the Update button is clicked. On exit the errors show up.

You did not attach a video but I followed Selwyn's V10 web video examples. I assume he used read only dbfs in his grids so no problem arose - mine were both updateable grids.

                        Mike,

The zip file (in my post above) contains the video (should have named it something different). Can't duplicate your problem.

OK, that changes things. I don't believe a grid linker would work on the desktop. You are using v10 methods which do work.

I had assumed your zip was my original 1. Your video confirms that it does work and Peter has confirmed the same.

I have the same setup as Bill but still get the errors. I'll try it on a Win7 computer.

Thank you both for your valued help.
