Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid in Dialog Box.

One of the new features in V10 is the ability to have a grid display in a desktop application through an Xdialog box. See part 1 here.

OK, so now I have built my dialog and can see the data in the grid, what happens next?

From the video, how do I now make use of the result of the search?

Assume I have opened the dialog from a button on a form, what events can I put into the dialog? eg Open another form filtered with the result of the dialog.

What do you want to do?

I don't know that a grid can manipulate desktop objects such as forms. Interesting question. But a grid can be queried and can open other grids or a5w pages. You can also insert an a5w page (w. a grid) on a form vis-a-vis a browser super-control.

      Hi Peter,

I did not have anything in mind just for the moment other than thinking, "now what".

On the face of it, it looks great and can do some cleaver searches, like look up an old invoice and reprint it. But there must be more to it than just a lookup tool, or am I being a bit blinkered?

You Brits have some interesting expressions. I think I've been blinkered a few times myself!

Think of a grid as being a browse. What do you do with a browse? But a grid can also be like a form. What do you with a form? Really the question is so open ended, it's hard to answer, but I think you get the idea.

Attached is an image of a grid with a modal poup "form", which is actually the grid's detail part. It includes calc fields, table lookups, dynamic label controls, a radio button, buttons that time perform calculations, a dropdown lookup, etc. In truth, I'm absolutely gobsmacked ;) by the v10 web capabilities!

          Re: Grid in Dialog Box.

I am of the same mind as Keith - impressed but at the same time puzzled, but my puzzlement is quite specific.

I want to display a grid from a dialog box so the user can select a record from a table. The grid was easy to build and much more flexible and powerful than doing a similar thing using record lists (which, as far as I can tell, don't even let you sort the list).

However, I can't figure out how to pass the selected record (it's primary key, say) back to the dialog. There's a variable associated with the grid in the dialog genie, but I can't find out how the grid can set this.
