Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Stringscanner

    Hi All

    This code runs but the value of txt doesn't seem to update, even though the value of LineText does. Is it obvious why not? What am I doing wrong?

    Code:
    dim scanner as P
    dim txt as C
    dim LineText as C
    txt = "Line 1" + crlf() + "Line 2" + crlf() + "Line 3" + crlf() + "Line 4" + crlf() + "Line 5"
    ui_msg_box("Value of txt",txt)
    scanner = stringscanner.create(txt)
    scanner.GotoLineStart(4)
    LineText = scanner.GetLineText()
    ui_msg_box("Value of LineText",LineText)
    scanner.GotoLineStart()
    scanner.ReplaceString("Line 4","This is a new line of info")
    scanner.GotoLineStart(4)
    LineText = scanner.GetLineText()
    ui_msg_box("Value of LineText?",LineText)
    ui_msg_box("Value of txt?",txt)
    Many thanks.
    Kind Regards
    Alan

    Re: Stringscanner

    The value of txt is assigned in this line.

    Code:
    txt = "Line 1" + crlf() + "Line 2" + crlf() + "Line 3" + crlf() + "Line 4" + crlf
    Where did you plan to change it?
    There can be only one.

      Yes, I did realise that txt hadn't been explicitly saved.

      In the absence of an explicit way to save the contents of the buffer, like, say, stringscanner.save(), I have had to set the offset to the beginning of the buffer and read the buffer to the end using
      txt=scanner.getremainer(). Any other suggestions welcome.
      Kind Regards
      Alan

        As far as I know, stringscanner is not used by Alpha 5 internally at all. I believe it is old technology kept for compatibility to older versions.

        I never found it an advantage over other Alpha functions. For key functions that are fast, see my list in this thread.

          The scanner object has two properties. They are mentioned right at the top of the help page above the list of Methods. They are offset and text. I was doing the same as you for ages before I opened my eyes and tripped over the obvious. :)

          So txt = scanner.text will do it.
          Or ui_msg_box("Value of txt?",scanner.text)

          Ira,

          I suppose v7 is now considered an old version but the stringscanner object was not introduced till then.

            Actually, it's in version 6 as well. It may have not been documented though.

              Ok a little bit older. But atleast still in this millenium.

              I have used it a bit and have not been disappointed with its speed. Admittedly, I have not run it through your wizbang speed figure outerer. ;) But one of these days I will.
