Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

    Hi,

I have run an old V8 application in V10 with a PDF doc with Override options, set with Watermark, both as Text and PDF in Runtime and can report that they both worked as expected.

As I had not tested that option till now I did not appreciate that it needed a fix.

Have loaded the latest patch and it flys.

      Martin,
Sorry I'm getting back to you so late. The pricing is actually very good. less than ver 9. Seeing Finian's reply is encouraging, but these others sort of make me a little nervous. I guess I will need to do some serious testing prior to rolling out.

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

After a lot of experimentation I can confirm that the watermarking feature does indeed work in V10 but seems to be very fussy about the PDF you use as the watermark.

I have managed to create a PDF that does work in V10 but have no way of determining what the structural difference is between the one that works and the one that doesnt.

Am very pleased to report that I just got an email for Cian, saying he had fixed the issue I reported and would be in next patch.

PS: I am still unclear on this question - if an existing client with V8 or V9 gets a new workstation with Windows 7, will they be able to use their existing V8 or V9 app, as is, with their current version on Amyuni, or will it fail, and thus force them to go to V10?

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

            Hi Cal,

This gives me a lot more hope that v10 will solve the reliability problems and brings me much closer to trying v10. A couple more users confirming that v10 solves the random problems they were seeing in v9 will push me over the edge.

So, any "other users" out there that can confirm Michael's comments?
This is by no means definitive....but over the weekend I played with one of my apps in V10 and to my surprise it ran ALMOST perfectly in V10. I did not have time to figure out the little "gotchas" that came up but they were minor. V10 does appear snappier than V9. I was really surprised that one screen in this app with an embedded browse (and it has alot going on) ran with no errors. Thankfully I had solved almost all of the errors I was getting by breaking EVERYTHING custom out into functions as Ira recommends. I still have users that are using this app in V9 that get some unhandled exception errors which are too random to define (as you seem to be experiencing as well). But, trying it on V10 was an eye opener....I would have bet there would have been a lot more incompatibilities than I found with the hour or so of testing I did.

            Regards,

            Jeff

              Hi Martin,

It appears it is as simple as running (V9 at least) in compatibility mode in Win 7.

              More info here.

              Jeff

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

I'm still unclear about v10 and the PDF driver.

If a system has multiple earlier versions (in my case v5-v9) and v10 is installed, will the PDFs still work in the older version? I'm guessing I misinterpreted it but one of the posts gave me the impression that the v10 installation might somehow disable the PDF driver for the earlier versions. If so, this will cause significant development problems - but, like I said, hopefully that was just my misinterpretation.

yes - and if that is the case, we would have to reinstall the correct driver as we jumped around between versions. Might be able to make shortcuts to the drive install for each of V5/V8/V9/V10

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

What I find interesting is that the 'unhandled exception errors' seem to be resolved with V10 but Alpha do not acknowledge there is a problem with V9. These errors have been seen by many from inexperienced to experienced developers but is the type of error that is hard for a developer to produce a repeatable example. First of all should the onus always be on the developer being able to reproduce the error for Alpha even when there are many having the same problem and are unable to generate a repeatable example?

Also what have Alpha done to V10 to fix it and shouldn't V9 users benefit from this fix?

I ask the question because when I have had these errors I assumed it was something I was doing wrong and yet there seem to be others in the same predicament with applications that previously worked and then didn't with V9. Something is amiss and Alpha must have at the very least an inkling to what it is because V10 is apparently not suffering from the same problem.

Cal that does not seem to be the case here. Both V9 and V10 work concurrently, They use different Drivers and different printer names (Alpha Five Printer and AlphaeFivePrinterV4) to seemingly avoid conflict. Not sure about V8 or earlier, but V9/V10 both work on the same system, same time.

                          Hi Martin,

I think it came out of the fact that there was a thread where someone said Selwyn had told him V9 would not work in Win 7.

The one thing I have wondered about(that is certainly not a huge burden) is the fact that you just have to go set that mode. I was wondering if an installer such as Astrum is used....can that mode be set automatically during installation so that the install appears really smooth to the end user? I don't use Astrum yet....but I am getting ready to on my current app.

                          Regards,

                          Jeff

                            Thanks
I can't speak for others - but for myself I will say that I wish I had not reqacted so negativey so quickly, but when I heard V5 thru V9 would not work in Windows 7, I sort-a panicked!!

I still have 25 days left in my trial, and if they get the bugs fixed and updated that affect the new app I am building, will go ahead and purchase V10.

I am sometime in the near future going to get another comp with Win 7 for testing apps in W7
