Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Questions: 4th: VB to xBasic

    VB to XBasic code conversion
    ============================
    I don't suppose anyone has any pointers, examples, or links to this sort of
    thing to help the learning curve?

    Seems to me that a lot of VB/VBA devs may now be ready to tell MS 'to go forth and multiply' and start looking for alternatives. As I previously mentioned, A5 V10 seems to check all the right boxes for me, and I have a feeling this may be true for others.

    Biggest problem seems to be the syntax and know-how learning curve.

    I, for one, would happy to begin a regular dialog of posting info as I convert
    from VB to XBasic. This mostly applies to desktop apps, but, for example:

    * API calls
    * WMI calls (allow building unique User IDs based on hardware)
    * Methods to prevent cloned software and detect VMWare use
    * Preventing other license violations
    * On-the fly user activation/de-activation (great for trial/demo versions)
    * Trapping public IP address and real-time blocking

    For me, I don't mind sharing info and knowledge. I spent a few years with the
    independent Access forums back when MS appreciated the dialog (and it was called usenet, not twitter).

    If XBasic and A5 is the direction we go, it will be a commitment for several
    years and I have no problem giving back. Especially since it seems to me that
    the community here is kinda reminiscent of the Access community back in the day.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Gary

    Search the forum for Active X and declare and declarestruct

    Various built-in functions already return most of this data, a few you'd have to write your own, or purchase from 3rd party developers such as Cal Locklin or myself.

    and this board is great for people giving and sharing knowledge. Search the code archives section and message board for code fragments and tips.

      Hi Gary,

      If you need information about translating vb api code into xbasic code, take a look at this site. There is a communication example of Named Pipes. First in VBA and later in Xbasic. It shows how you can communicate with Word/Excel and Alpha Five with Named Pipes. There are also examples how to use declare, declarestruct and onther information for accessing dll's in Xbasic. You'll find another example here.

      Have a nice time here and enjoy. Alpha Five IS at the moment the best Front-End alternative for all those other DB environments.

        Hi Ira,

        Many thanks for the response.

        Just to clarify, some the things I will need to convert from VB to xB (API Calls, WMI Inspects etc.) look realtively similar. Some will, no doubt, have quirks that need to be overcome.

        As I work though the conversion, I'd like to start a regular feedback of 'how to' - not only for the benefit of other vb devs switching to A5, but also for those A5 users who maybe avoided some of these tools (because they can appear cumbersome).

        Regards,

        Gary
