Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Closing a Browse

When I open a form containing a browse, then select the record listed on the browse - the form opens containing the record. I would like for the browse to close. How do I accomplish this?

Welcome to the message board, Brent.

Tell us more about the specific steps you're taking in the sequence you describe. Are you working with a default layout, or have you built a custom layout? Are you opening the "second" form from a button push? What actions or script is run by that button?

      Tom,

      Thank you for the welcome.

Unfortunately I am not a programmer, so therefore I am not that familiar with the terms you are asking. The attached may help in what my DB looks like. I have a Menu were I would press a button labeled Company List the attached then opens with the Browse. I would then select which company I want to view, opening the record. I would like for the form Company List to close.

      I hope this helps.

        Brent,
        When you say
I would then select which company I want to view, opening the record.
how are you doing this--from a button's OnPush event, a browse doubleclick event, ??

Regardless, I would think that you would simply close the form in the same script that opens the record.
        Mike

          Mike,

You are correct. I must have overlooked this as I was setting up the browse.

Thank you and Tom for your help.

            Re: Closing a Browse

Sorry for reaching out again - I am still not able to close the form which contains the browse.

            1. The browse has a button contained within the cell. I am able to go to the form record when I press the button.

            2. However, the browse form stays open. I have been working on this since late last night.

I realize my programming skills are not the best. But this is why I am using Alpha 5.

            Any help...

              Brent,
If you are using a button within a browse cell apparently you are already using xbasic.
Maybe have this on your button script-- topparent.close()

Out of context so who can really know. Maybe you have called the form as dialog, which, in that case, the script stops once the form shows and will not continue until the called form closes? Then if truly you do want a modal form and want to close the original form (that has the button you pressed), then you would have to test for the existence of the form and if present, close it. All of this can be done via Action Script.

                Mike,

                "On Exit" is the following:

                DIM mode as c
                mode = parentform.mode_get()
'If the form is in Enter or Change mode, first save the changes before closing the form
if mode = "ENTER" .or. mode = "CHANGE" then
                parentform.commit()
'Check to see if the record was successfully saved
                if parentform.mode_get()<>"VIEW" then
ui_msg_box("Unable to save your changes","Please correct and save, or discard your changes", UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
                end
                end if
                end if
                'Close the form
                parentform.close(.f.)
                'Close the current window.
'check that you are in a window
                if is_object(topparent.this) then
                topparent.close(.f.)
                end if

Again, because of my programming skills, I am not sure what this means. However, I did purchase "Xbasic for Everyone" to help.

                  Brent,
Use the code you have posted in your button script that opens the next form. The OnExit event is a form event that occurs after a form is closed/closing (exited) so will not fire until that time.

                    Re: Closing a Browse

Another possibility here is to not have the button in the browse at all. You could have one on teh form that zooms to the selected record in the brows. This can be done in action script. You can include a step that closes the browse
