Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    multiple file select

I have been playing with the multiple file select command

    UI_GET_FILES_MULTIPLE()

It doesn't seem to let you select multiple files in one go by pressing the shift or ctrl key as you would with windows explorer. You have to click select a file, choose file then click open and then repeat for each file you want.

Is there an xbasic command that does let you use the shift or ctrl keys to select multiple files in one hit?

    Re: multiple file select

    Alpha Help File:
    Description
The UI_GET_FILES_MULTIPLE() function prompts for filenames. Allows user to select multiple filenames.

    Supported By

Alpha Five Version 5 and Above

    Limitations

    Desktop applications only.

    Example

    ui_get_files_multiple("Multiple Files", "c:\documents", "(*.txt)")

Have you tried it using a wildcard?
Most things are simple but unfortunately only after the first time

      Re: multiple file select

The wildcard just filters the list presented after pushing the Select a File button. I'm thinking one-at-a-time is the way this function handles the selections.

Doesn't appear to be too difficult to construct your own multi select list box if you know the location and extension of the files.
        There can be only one.

Yes that is how it seems to work. I was hoping that amongst the many functions that there is one that will allow multiple selction using the ctrl or shift key otherwise it is extemely tedious selecting one at time to add to the list.

I'm sure I cannot be the first to come across this but couldn't find any other threads relating to this problem. Probably not searching with the right key words.

Started writing the above and then did some more searching. Seems I need to use something like this
          Code:
          myvar=ui_get_file("Test","*.*","","ME")
          ? myvar
          = C:\Documents and Settings\Geoff Meredith\My Documents\database\email
          email_test.MUF
          email_test.adb
          email_test.ALB
          email_test.ALM
          Email_Test.Alx
          See this thread.

Thanks Stan. Not quite what I wanted but something I wasn't aware of so I have learnt at least two new things today. In fact I am a little annoyed with myself as I started of using the ui_get_file() and if I had actually read the help file properly I would have noticed the optional parameters. Instead I leapt into using the multiple select version thinking that must be what I want.

            You live and learn......maybe!

              Re: multiple file select

I recently had a similar problem - wanted a "get_files_multiple" routine but the A5 version sucks for most typical usages (sorry, it does) so I came up with the attached routine. Use it, give it to others, but please leave my name in the "created by:".

It isn't quite a "drop in replacement" because the 4th argument is different. The A5 version has a "default file list" but my routine simply shows all files in the folder (sort of - see "exclude_hidden_file" below). Having a default file list doesn't make a lot of sense when you can switch from folder to folder.

In addition to allowing you to use the shift key to select a group of files, my "AIMS" routine has a "select all" button by default. Here is a list of all the options available:

title - basically the same as the A5 version
              default_path - same as the A5 version
              file_types - same as the A5 "file_filter"
drive_choices - leave blank to allow all mapped drives
              exclude_hidden_files - *default shows hidden files (.F.)
              font_size - default is 8
              font_face - default is Arial
              allow_new_folder - default is .T.
show_select_all - default is .T. to include a button for selecting all files in the folder
std_sort_order - Can be Ascending or Descending (Default = A)

The selection dialog is also resizable.

The only down side I know of with this is that I haven't found a way to select anything except mapped drives.

You may want to change the font default to MS San Serif to match the other A5 message boxes. I've created my own custom messages to replace most of the built-in versions and prefer a slightly larger font. The default was fine when screens were 640x480 but it's a bit small for a 1440x900 LCD screen. My standard is Arial, 9. I'm not sure why I set the default to 8 on this one - it was probably a mistake that will soon get corrected.

*The ui_get_path() and ui_browse_for_folder() each work differently. One shows hidden files; the other doesn't. And neither one has it as an option. So, my version of ui_get_path() and the attached AIMS_get_file_multiple() allow the developer to set this when calling the function.

DISCLAIMER: As you can see from the create date, this is a recently created routine and hasn't been through the test of time. If you find problems with it, let me know.

I should add that the original ui_get_files_multiple() came out before xdialog was available. At that time, it may have been the best they could do.

Cal, thanks for the code. Double bonus for me as I'm trying to get my head round xdialog at the moment so practical examples are really helpful.

                      Well Goeff,
I would gauge this as a 900 level astrophysics course of xdialogs. Good luck starting with this one! :D

Oh well only another 899 levels to go before I reach enlightenment.
