Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Active Link tables and sets

I currently have Alpha Five version 9. I am evaluating upgrading to version 10, but would like some informed feedback first. In version 9, I have found sets composed of Active Link SQL tables to be very slow. Has the speed improved in version 10?

Up until now, I have only created desktop apps, but the slowness described above has greatly hindered what I can use Alpha for.

Could those of you who have come from version 9 describe your satisfaction / dissatisfaction with the upgrade?

I would like to put together a corporate intranet web site in the near future, so if anyone has done something similar with version 10, that would be nice to know as well.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

How is this current thread any different from your last thread?

Re: Active Link tables and sets

I guess if you had paid a little more attention, you would have noticed that my last thread was in the Alpha Five Version NINE forum. In that thread I was asking if it was possible to speed up the Active Link tables in version NINE. In that thread I was left with the impression that the problem can not be overcome in version NINE.

If you look closely, you will see that this is the Alpha Five Version TEN forum. Therefor, I am asking helpful people if the problem with version NINE has been reduced or eliminated in version TEN.

Hopefully your response is not indicative of a general intolerance to new users who are asking questions while trying to make decisions.

Thanks to anyone with a helpful response.

Why don't you just download the V10 trial version and see for yourself if the speed has changed?

Thanks for the response Raymond; I may do that. Perhaps there are not many Apha developers that use the product with SQL Active Link sets. Seems hard to believe for a product with Alpha's feature set.

I've been using Alpha 10.5 for about three months now. I have a networked application using native Alpha DBF tables, and it works fine. I bought the 'Alpha DataBase Upsize Genie' to switch to SQL Server 2005, and active link tables.

Any browses, forms, or reports that are based on sets are extremely slow! I had to switch back to native alpha tables. I'm out the $250.00.

I don't mean to rub salt in the wound but, by any chance, did you have any layouts based just on single active link tables? If so, was the performance reasonable? I've been trying on and off for the past few months to coax decent speed from a form based on a single active link table but without much success.

As a result I'm in the process of building xdialogs from which to do direct SQL calls to the back end, but it would sure be nice to have the option to use an existing form instead of having to rebuild everything from scratch.

No. I have 4 tables, 7 if you count the read only tables. Browses, Forms that are based on only one table work OK, but anything that uses the set (only 4 tables in the set) is extremely slow, and I only have about 50 records in the database.

                    Hi carlclay (and Finnian);

Some time back I upgraded to 10.5 hoping to achieve some speed improvements in the active link arena. I still found it to be far too slow. I am pretty well resigned to only using Alpha for native tables. It ruins the RAD aspect of Alpha to have to hand code everything to get around the problem. I will look for a different development tool for use with SQL. Sorry I didn't follow this thread. I might have been able to save you some time, frustration, and money.
