Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL and runtime?

Does v10 runtime allow sql to be used in a production application? or Can one distribute an sql db to others?

    Thanks ahead to all.

      Re: SQL and runtime?

      Dave:

I'm pretty sure that the runtime can run any code that you can write using the V10 developer edition. That would include calls to a server database.

The server database is an entirely separate product and how it is deployed would depend on the license for that product. That would range from the free edition of MySQL on up to megabucks for SQL Server or Oracle - though I think there are free/lite versions of those too. Most of the "free" licenses have strict limitations when a "commercial" application is involved.

In many (most) instances an Alpha app would be connecting to an already existing and administered server database. If you're starting completely from scratch, you not only need to manage your Alpha app but become a server database administrator as well.

        Thanks Finnian,

I was told that the V9 unlimited runtime would not run sql and it would require run engine to do so. Unlimited Runtime is unlimited and run engine is a per seat expense. I have seen no offer of Run Engine with version 10. I was hoping they included sql abilities with the Unlimited Runtime. It makes the product way more desirable.

          Re: SQL and runtime?

Curiosity got the better of me, so I re-installed MySQL. Using XBasic in V10 Developer, I created a connection string for MySQL and added a couple of SQL statements to generate some information back from MySQL. I saved the code on a button and then ran the code with the V10 Runtime. It worked.

FWIW, the V10 unlimited runtime install includes what look to be the connection dlls for the major server databases, so I don't think there is a limitation on what you can run with it. This is not meant to be definitive, and it will be a while before I can go back to SQL testing.

Dave - I'm pretty sure there is only ONE runtime - the unlimited, or i.e., the runengine. I think the same is true of the developer's version, it is platinum.

              Finnian and Martin,

Thanks for your work and looking into this.

If Alpha V10 runtime has the ability to run sql, then Alpha should let people know. It would be a huge plus to develepors everywhere and making V10 much more desirable and more cost effective.

Alpha Five v9 Unlimited Distribution License, check here

and here is text direct from Alphas Store:

                Alpha Five v10 Runtime

                For deploying desktop (PC-based) applications

The runtime lets you distribute the desktop applications you build so people without Alpha Five installed can run them on their PCs. The Runtime License allows you to distribute an unlimited number of applications to an unlimited number of people. (Formerly called the "Unlimited Distribution License")

Conclusion: In version 10 the Unlimited Distribution Licence is now called Alpha Five v10 Runtime and there is sql if you got the right version.
