Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rules in V10

I read (somewhere) that V10 would enable field rules to be optionally triggered when a script updated records in a table.

I cannot find this functionality, either in the script genie or the field rule creation screens.

Has anyone been able to use this function?

      Hi Keith...

i import a bank statement then post it to a table named OrderPay...

have posting field rules in OrderPay that post the amount paid to the Orders table (Orders->TotalPaid). I have written a script that can be fired to do the post but i have gotten in trouble multiple times by creating new forms to do the import but forgetting to fire the script that does the post.

it would be soooo nice if i could specify, in OrderPay, that the post is to occur both when an a payment is entered in a form as well as when a payment is imported with the import.

        Hi David,

You can create a Posting operation that can be run as part of the import script.

          Re: Field Rules in V10

that is what i am doing...
but when i make modifications or add new forms i sometimes forget to add/update the posting script.

i was hoping that i could invoke an 'automatic' field rule trigger when the import occurs. i had read that this feature was available in v10... i just can't find it & as far as i can tell the Help document for v10 has not been released.

          thanks

            David

If you are talking about form level field rules, look at Whats new in V10 (under help) in the Desktop features it explains how to access and use...

              Pls read

                  Re: Field Rules in V10

That should make quite a few people happier as I remember quite a few threads with complaints from new people....but now I suppose redirection to this alternative will be the solution (one more bookmark!!).

I did notice the description of the new .validate_record() is incorrect stating that
the <tbl> object also has a new .validate_record() method that allows you to validate the record against the Field Rules when you are using the older <tbl>.enter_records() and <tbl>.change_records() methods.
should have been <tbl>.enter_begin() and <tbl>.enter_end() listed as the older methods. There is NO comment hotspot as in the help file to report this so placing it here just so it is somewhat referenced---don't have a link to Alpha's support staff handy!

Considering that the What's New seems to be now considered an additional place to refer to in regards to the Help File a Comment hotspot should be placed there as well IMO.
