Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error Message after Back up

I have just used the backup function to backup a database called BUSINESS DEV ASSIST located in C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST. I have backup the date base to C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST\backup

Subsequently have made some alterations to a form but when I come to save the form I get the following:
The system cannot find the path specified. C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST\backup\Sets\CONTACT AND ACTIVITIES\Form\Contact View/Add/Edit.a5bak

and I cannot save the amendments.

How do I get it to save or have I done something wrong in backing up the date base?

Would be grateful for any help.

    Thanks

    Doula

Wild guess. The forward slashes used in the form name are confusing Alpha. Try renaming the form without using characters that would be illegal in a filename.

      Tom ............

Thanks for the help. When I made the backup I thought it would help my housekeeping to keep the backup in a sub directory called Backup.

I haven't added anything to the file name. The Forward slashes seemed to have been generated either by Alpha or the system.

I have checked in the detail view under the Tables/Sets tab on the control panel and all the paths are pointing to the original (correct) location C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST not C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST\backup\Sets\CONTACT AND ACTIVITIES\Form\Contact View/Add/Edit.a5bak.

Should I have made the backup in the main directory C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST?

Alternatively how do I change the path back to C:\BUSINESS DEV ASSIST?

I think Tom's first assessment was correct.

          I would suggest this:

          1. First and foremost make a copy of the folder containing the database
          2. using windows explorer, open the copy and delete all subfolders relating to the issue
          3. open the database in the copy, rename the form, possibly using underscores for the slashes, but do not use dashes.
          4. open the form, modify, and see if it will save correctly

            Tom / Martin ...........

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have a go later in the day and let you know how I get on.

Just off to battle with the snow (with 2 or 3 snowflakes we grind to a halt here in the UK!) and try and get to the office. Would normally work here but have all the staff Christmas presents so must go an do the Santa thing!

            Cheers

              Martin ............

Why I didn't spot I had used / in the form name I don't know - must be the Christmas spirit!

Did as you suggested and hey presto all solved!

              Thanks for your help.
