Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Changing text on a form?

I've got a form with a text label on it. I have the default text set to "Application Name" and I'm trying to change it to "Hello World" when the form loads. In the OnInit, I put the following code:

    Startup_1st_Time.AppName.text = "Hello World"

    The form name is: Startup_1st_Time
The text box is named: AppName

When I run the form, the text label remains "Application Name". Am I putting this in the wrong location???

My next step is to replace the text label with the name from a table. Is there something I need to do to get this to work? Perhaps get a pointer to the table, although the table is in my set that the form is based on.

Re: Changing text on a form?

In the same way the backslash is used to delimit folder, subfolder, and subsubfolder names in a path statement, the object "path" in an Alpha Five expression is delimited with colons. Instead of

    Code:
    Startup_1st_Time.AppName.text = "Hello World"

    try

    Startup_1st_Time:AppName.text = "Hello World"
    Can you see the difference?

Since the event is running at the form level you could also do

    Code:
    This:AppName.text = "Hello World"

Thank you Tom. That clears it up.

I spoke too soon. Does not like

        Startup_1st_time:AppName

And yet, if I start to type:

        Startup

        it echos Startup_1st_time

and if I put a colon, I can then select AppName from the list of objects.

Not sure why I'm getting an error???

          I always simplify: AppName.text = "Hello World"

Try the OnActivate event, although I just did a test w. OnInit and it worked fine.

table() gives you the primary table name.

            Never mind.

            What I needed was:

            :Startup_1st_time.AppName.text = "Hello World"

Thanks for getting me moving towards the right solution.

              John,
If you use the Object Explorer, one form of correct syntax is created for you with simple point and click, copy/paste......I mean, why guess!? :)

I'm curious. Do you have another object on the form that is also named "Startup_1st_time"? Or another layout opened that has the same name?

The reason I ask is that I've done it many times (in previous versions) without the leading colon and it has always worked fine. The leading colon just tells A5 to "start at the highest level possible" in case there are other objects with the same name. Without the colon, A5 starts by looking for a child to the current object. (My naming convention has 3 primary rules - unique, unique, and unique. OK, I often use the same field/index name in multiple tables but layout names are always unique and never the same as a table/set name.)

No, there is NO other objects with this name. I have a set named "Startup" and a form named "Startup_1st_time".
