Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo Field Behavior

In A5v8, if a memo field was placed in a form, a small box was located in the upper right corner of the memo field, above the vertical scroll bar. By clicking this box, a new window would open up with an enlarged version of the memo field. This was useful in editing, or viewing the entire memo field if the memo field in the form was too small to display its entire contents. Sadly, this feature is missing from A5v10.

Thanks Keith. I didn't see that little box with the pencil before in version 10 but I do now. What happens is that if you place 2 memo fields side by side and dont leave room for the little box, it becomes hidden.

Was better in version 8 when it was right above the vertical scroll bar.

      Thanks again.

I suppose you could always put a custom button where you need it, right?

I could add custom buttons, but i have so many memo fields and my forms are so tightly packed together, almost not worth the effort. But I do appreciate the reply.

            Dear Toothfixer,

The issue you raise was previously discussed on the following post:

            http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...t=mcgaffic+fly

Unfortuantely, I can not report that Alpha has fixed this is version 10. It's disappointing when they muck up something that was working in a previous version.

A step backwards in functionality, and a major step backward in the quality of the icon!

Just curious -- are you a dentist? If so, the meticulousness you bring to your work may be sometimes a challenge to realize with Alpha Five.

Thanks Bob. I searched for previous posts, but missed yours. Very informative. Reminds me of the Bruce Springsteen song "One Step Up and Two Steps Back".

Exactly. Why they would "fix" something that's not broken is beyond me. If they are going to make changes like this, at the least they ought to give the user the option to have it either way. Geeze!

                  Re: Memo Field Behavior

The remedy has been around for a bit now (from my help file)....
Form and Browse Layouts - Memo and RTF Memo Fields - Button Position - In Version 9, the button that pops-up the Memo and RTF Memo editor is positioned outside of the control. In Version 8, the button was positioned inside the control. Some users have expressed a preference for the Version 8 style. You can control where the button appears through Xbasic. (You can put the command in your application's Autoexec script, button, wherever...).
To revert to V8 (and older version) style:
                  a5.System_Mode_set("field_popup_button_position","inside")

                  To use the V9 style:
                  a5.System_Mode_set("field_popup_button_position","outside")
                  Mike

Just tested the code snippet MikeC mentions in a vers 10 desktop app and it behaves as advertised.

Yes, except look to see that the code MikeC provided abolishes the browse date field popup dialog.

Yep--sure does do just that...but it can be called from an event and then changed back from another so that it only affects the object you want it to ...such as the OnArrive and OnDepart events....or others. I would think this could be done for most scenarios.
