Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

So why don't you just teach your users how to enter numbers the right way?:D

    Hi Ira,
I wish I could be able to use formatting in Xdialog. I do not want to have a Xdialogbox prompting with another Xdialogbox just for one numeric field.

You can also use the change event on an XDialog control to process each key stroke in a text box, and ignore, keep or modify as needed.
Yeh, :( I am afraid I have to intercept each keystroke with the 'changing' event, as I know there is no other solution.

    Thanks for your reply

Cal's suggestion is one way, and probably the best way.

Set the format of the field to only allow numbers.
This triggers me. How can you do that?

Yeah. That's one of the problems of communicating this way. It's sometimes hard to get a point across correctly because you're not sure what the other person is seeing differently than you are. Real communication can sometimes be very difficult.

Sorry Cal. It was the "not both" that threw me. Just seemed strange.

My point about the minor inconsistencies was prompted by remembering that in V5 you could, in the interactive,

    Code:
    new var = 7
    ? new Var
    = 7.000000
    or
    Code:
new var of some name = 7

? new var of some name
    = 7.000000

It allowed a multiple word variable name. This has since been corrected.

The point is that the Interactive Window simply does one action at a time. Running the Transform() function as above converts a numeric value to a character value. This is all well and good and exactly as it should be.

The problem occurs when trying to use that in an xdialog to change a value entered as a number to a character value and then put that character value back into the numeric field. The numeric field can't take a character value. At best, it simply converts it back to a numeric field and you lose the 'formatting' that was created during the transform.

Now try to make it work in the xdialog where the field is either numeric or character but not both.

To add salt - I haven't been able to get the transform to work. It deletes the contents of the field when it is numeric.

I also found that there is no need to change back to numeric as the function meets that need. If someone enters text and leaves the control, the function sets it to 0.00

    What?

    Code:
    dim x as n
    x=123
    x=transform(x,"@t 999,999.99")
    ?x
    = 123
You can't take a numeric, have it implicitly changed to a string, TRANSFORM() it (which is a string value), and place it back in the same numeric (which implicitly converts it from a string to a numeric), and have anything other than a numeric (which in an XDialog would not show any trailing zeros).

If it's a character type, then sure, TRANSFORM() can modify the data in a similar way to ltrim(str(val(fieldvalue),16,2))
