Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Updating to Version 10

Did I miss something in the updating instructions? Both Clients that I updated to version are experiencing increasingly more errors as they use the program. Programs that functioned properly in v9 are no longer working in v10. I can't keep up with the all errors. Did I do something wrong when I updated to v10? I didn't think it was supposed to be a difficult process?

    Lee,
No answers here but a couple of questions to maybe help others help you.

From what version of Alpha did you update from?--may help others give a bit more specific answers.

Was there a reason to upgrade? (A feature, fix, ?? that was needed)

I updated one from version 8 and the other from version 9. Simple things, like buttons that use actioning scripting to open forms no longer work. They all now say "No Records Found In Query"

        Re: Updating to Version 10

I replaced a button that used action scripting to open a form a goto a record based on a value in a field on the current form. So I created a new button to do run the same action scripting and it didn't work. I changed the action scripting to custom xbasic and it works perfectly fine, I don't want to have to go through every button in the entire application and write custom code for them. Here is the code I used. Very simple. maybe something is going on with the indexing.
I noticed in the file folder for the database a ton of .ASX files have appeared since upgrading to v10. Could this be related to the problem I am having? Not sure what the .ASX files are?

I also tried updating the indexes on the tables and sets associated with forms being opened. No luck. I did have luck one time. I deleted lingering .ASX files and then click the button and it opened the form but did not goto the correct record. But the second time I tried I got the "No Record in Query" error message I went to look for the .ASX file but it wasn't there. I did change the query to a "user filter" instead of a "base filter".

Here is the code that works every time.
        Code:
        DIM tbl as p
        DIM vWo as c

        vWo = frmWksht:wo_num.value

        form.view("frmJobs")
        frmJobs.index_set("Wo_Num")
        FrmJobs.find(vWo)

          Re: Updating to Version 10

I am not able to offer you any solutions but I can confirm we had similar issues when we evaluated v10.

Our application has grown from the original dos days to a rather extensive mult-user application that runs our large office.

For some reason, v10 deals with filters and indexes differently that v9.

I installed the evaluation version of v10 on several desktops and my users freaked out. Even when v10 behaved like it should with filters and indexes being used on form start ups, it responded significantly slower than v9 and previous versions.

Often times, when the filter worked, the form would open with a random record selected rather than the first record that meets the filter requirement.

I tried re-doing the forms several different ways and was not able to get the app to run like it should.

We have decided that we will skip v10 and see what v11 has to offer for desktop improvements/performance.

Sounds like the same problem, i had to custom code all the filters, not sure what the underlying issue is here but something is off.

unless there are features in V10 that you have to have, go back to 8 and 9. I am running apps in 4.5, 5, 8, 9, and 10 at different client locations.

Also, not a good idea to update a client without first testing the app extensively with the new version.

Please see my Xbasic versus Action Script Coding tips. Compare the Xbasic View of your Action Scripts in a V8 or V9 version of your App versus V10.

All the problems I have seen at the XBasic level in V10 have been very esoteric and not something people would run into (other than myself and 1 or 2 others)!
