Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    argument is incorrect data type

I have several formulas programmed in my payroll program, some of which show "argument is incorrect data type" as I scroll the cursor down through the list of calculations, although the calculations appear to work properly. I read the thread concerning this type of error and it ended with an explanation that it had been corrected in build 3379. I am using build 3509. An example: ROUND(Calc->Regular Gross+Calc->Otgross+Calc->Prevwageregtot+Calc->Prevwageottot,2)
Since it seems to work, even with the error message, I thought you may like to know about it.

Re: argument is incorrect data type

    Hi Howard,

"The current Alpha Five Version 10 build is 2659_3515 (released on 26 DEC 2009 12:04 PM)"
I cant see a build for 3379 and there is no mention of this being an issue in any other build.

Re: argument is incorrect data type

Keith, I don't know where I got that build # from but I just opened V10 and found Version 10, Build 2659 and System Addin build 3515. Sorry for the confusion, but I still question the "Incorrect data type" messages I am getting. Could it be because the calculation is contained within a "ROUND" set of parenthesis?

Re: argument is incorrect data type

Probably a timing issue in the calculated field editor. You don't say what the name of the result of the calculation is assigned to, and I'm not sure in what order Alpha resolves them but to render

        something = ROUND(Calc->Regular Gross+Calc->Otgross+Calc->Prevwageregtot+Calc->Prevwageottot,2)

Alpha must resolve four other calculated fields first.

I'll bet if you substitute the calculation for Calc->Regular Gross in place of the calculated field name, etc for the other three, the calculated field builder won't show the error/message.
        There can be only one.

Re: argument is incorrect data type

Stan, I did it that way to keep it simple. Substituting the other calcs would make this formula very long, but it is worth a try. This is not the only calc that demonstrates this problem. I didn't want to spend a lot of time on it because the calcs are coming out correctly. Also, to Keith, the reference I previously made to build 3379 came from a long thread that I found when searching for an answer to this problem. I tried to search again so I could give you a reference but had no luck finding the same thread again. I was working in the V10 forum so I assumed that the answer referred to V10. Obviously it did not. I am having a lot of trouble updating this program due to withholding changes by IRS and it may be that I am using V10 as well as Windows 7 at the same time and I am not sure which program may be giving me trouble. The program has been running perfectly fine for YEARS until I updated the withholding formulas.
