Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

To Delete or Not to Delete

During our development and use of the Alpha system from Dos A4V3 to current A5V10 we have never deleted records in our networked system. When someone enters a new record it is automatically written with it's link field, saved and reopened in edit mode for the user to enter the new record. If they decide to cancel the entering of a new record, a field (Delete)is written "true" and forms and reports that run from our system are filtered not to see these cancelled records. We did this approach to help insure our memo fields do not corrupt in a network environment.

I have found that approx 10% of our records in the system have been cancelled by our users.

With implementing our new A5 V10 software, forms are noticeably slower in updating information. My thought to speed them up is to remove the form filters and color code the records as deleted so users will ignore them and then run a delete and pack operation on weekends to clean up.

Sorry for the long novel but I wanted to explain our caution with our data. My question to those who are running systems on networks, would removing the filters and periodically delete / pack records with memos be safe or is there a better way?

    Thanks

    Jim

Re: To Delete or Not to Delete

My thoughts for what little they may be worth:

    - Sounds safe enough to me.
    - NOTHING is safe without a backup!!!
    - Not sure how much improvement you will see. A5 (windows) will be slower than A4 (DOS) when filtering records. I don't know why - that just seems to be the way it is.

I'd suggest making a copy of your app in a new folder, then delete the "extra" records and pack the tables to see how much of a speed improvement you get. Then decide if the extra work will be worthwhile.

You may also find that careful definition of indexes along with careful filter definition will help A5 use LQO better. If you aren't familiar with LQO, look up Lightning Query Optimization in the Help file and/or do some searches on the various A5 boards here.

Afterthought: I'm not sure what happens to LQO when you set a filter in the layout and then open it with an additional filter. You might have better luck leaving the layout filter blank and just passing the filter when you open the layout.
