Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    cannot open database ? WHAT!

Coming into work this morning I find I can't open my database. Nothing occured over the weekend and other users are able to open it with their runtime versionw, just can't open it from my computer in either runtime or developers versions. I need to get in to make some adjustments to the reports in a hurry. Never a problem before, when it's important, this happens

Comes up with a message telling me
Error loading s:\sitedata.dbf: this file is currently not available for use on this computer

    What could be causing this.

Could something have rebooted your machine over the weekend? Sounds like you're logged in without necessary permissions.

Re: cannot open database ? WHAT!

After rebooting, I still can't get into the database using Alpha. I can get into every other program and still have full privledges.

Why is Alpha not letting me log in. I can open every other database program on the same server including the backup versions which happen every Monday evening so its too old to use right now.

Is there a setting in Alpha that has control over what is allowed to be open and why

If it worked yesterday and it does not work today, then something happened in between. Most likely either a windows update, someone fiddling with your computer, or an update in an antibirus or similar program.

But one thing is for sure - if it worked yesterday and it does not work today, then something happened in between.

PS: or else simething hijacked your mapped network drive.

I suggest you google your error message. I believe this is a network issue not a Alpha5 issue.

That's Elementary my dear Watson, but WTF was it. Well sure enough, something did hijack my mapped drive just as you suggested. Well done.

On Friday I tried the Windows remote desktop help software, (that's when you log into another computer remotley for you laments). What it id was change my IP address from dynamic to static. Sure as heck I change that back to dynamic and Alpha Starts up.. Ta Da !

I love it, first thing Monday morning.....

Hope I'm more entertaining than a bother to you folks on the forum, please don't ban me :o.

I know these are silly situations, but sometimes i get this brain cloud running down the center of my head that blocks certain common sense functions. Thank you for your attention

Not at all, mr holmes, not at all. One of the irritating things about software programming is all the non-programming stuff you have to do!
