Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reports- Suppress Rows

I have a report made up of several rows of fields and I want to conditionally hide some rows. At the same time I do not want report gaps where the hidden rows are.

I have followed forum advice and have:

Enclosed each row in a conditional object and set the conditions. Hides OK.

Set Cond Object and all enclosed feilds to shrink.

Also set report section to shrink.

I Just can't figure how to get rid of the blank gaps.

    Any suggestions or help?

    Thanks

More details would help us help you.

Typically the fields on a "row" correspond to a "record" in the table. Records are typically excluded from a report by filtering. Will that not work for you?

If there are any numeric fields in your row ensure that they are set to blank if zero format.

        Hi Tom

The data is filtered, one record per page. The report is Laid out like:

        Header Section:

        Sample No Sample Description Date

        Test Description Test Result

        Detail Section:

        Test1 Result1
        Test2 Result2
        Test3 Result3
        Test4 Result4

Ive enclosed each detail Row in a conditional object, so if say Result1 isnull then the "row" is hidden. This does work, the row is hidden, but there is a gap at that point.

Hope that helps explain the problem

        Robin

Robin, in a situation like this I'd be tempted to dump the data to a temporary table and base the report on that table. Keep that in mind if the "shrink on print" option fails.

A messy alternative is a single conditional object that has a separate layer for each combination that might be possible. (Though I have to tell you my head hurts just thinking about it).

Does your table structure look like..

              Code:
              Sam_No	Character	5	0
              Sam_Desc	Character	15	0
              Sam_Date	Date	8	0
              Tst_Desc1	Character	15	0
              Tst_Rslt1	Character	15	0
              Tst_Desc2	Character	15	0
              Tst_Rslt2	Character	15	0
              Tst_Desc3	Character	15	0
              Tst_Rslt3	Character	15	0
              Tst_Desc4	Character	15	0
              Tst_Rslt4	Character	15	0
If so, download my attchment, unzip and add to your database, and try the report Better_way.
              There can be only one.

Thanks all. Its fantastic that so many people on the site share their expertise.

Making real progress now following Stan's example. To make it work I've had to make calculated fields to convert numberics to characters.

Will post up something when done.

                  Re: Reports- Suppress Rows

Hi the conversion of numeric fields to character should not have been necessary as we frequently have reports that are required to miss lines where there is no relevant data be it string or numeric.
If you can post your app or part of it I will gladly take a look.

Have done the conversion because I have some fields with default Zero instead of null. This is a legacy of My Access LIMS system as a work round to "Cannot Have Null"- before I knew a better work round.
