Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Documentation for Alpha 5 Version 10

Is there some place that I can get the Alpha Five documentation that is current? My help file confuses me as does the web help. It is unclear whether it is for V8, V9, or V10. And, many of the links to other resources are broken. Also, it mentions in the current help file that there is a pdf version. I would like to download it, but can't find it. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Wayne

Check out this thread. Pay attention to Richard Rabins' responses as he provides 'some' solutions.

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=81452

The short answer, V10 help files are not ready. FWIW, many are frustrated by the SLOW development of the documentation, which has always been a problem for Alpha. On the bright side: (1) Ask a question on this forum and it will get answered; (2)Selwyn and his crew work overtime to fix the bugs, there is no other company which can match their efforts; (3) I believe Richard has been in the frying pan on this issue for a long time. He does work hard at making us aware of what help is available.

I've often said that the documentation is the hardest part of software development. The person/s who write/s it must have a vast knowledge of the product, coordinate the efforts with the developers and have the skill and ability to write so that the readers can easily comprehend. Then, it all must be reviewed.

This reminds me of building a new house. Particular attention is paid to the building but the landscaping is not only the last to be done, but is usually the shortest part of the budget.

Hang in there, ask questions, the documentation will come. But, so will 2011 :D

Is there at least a list of System Variables and system Functions (rated from most to least used would be great). Context help is great but without Docs you have a case of you don't know what you don't know. Very frustrating to build a function only to find that it already existed.

        Michael,
I think you should be able to find out whether a function you need exists for the most part by checking out the help file---knowing where to look in the help is, of course, the key to doing this.

Here are a couple of things to help you on your way....The link will bring you to links to basically all of the functions in the online help file.
        http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...Type_Title.htm

I usually just go into the specific ones by choosing the type and then going to the page where they are located....using the index check for "functions" under the following types. Say, type in character in the search box...or mathematical, date, time, list processing, database,.......

Getting familiar with the functions in this way should really speed up your search process ---at least it did for me.
        Mike

          Thanks for your reply.

But, why this code works for Alpha 5v9 and not for 5v10?

You can see that we modified for Val(Trim(Nom_Acc_No)), but didn't tested yet in version 10.

          Code:
          MC_Year_Text = "Year"
          MC_Header = "Proffit & Loss"

Question pertaining to this subject. In another thread, Richard mentioned a tutorial and event had a download link to the tutorial outline. It was called:

Alpha Five Web Applications: The Tutorial Unleashing the power of AJAX by Martin Heller

Does anyone know the status of documentation?

              Thanks

I went to the web page Mike mentioned above http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...Type_Title.htm and I note that the list of function the last 15 odd links on the right side of teh list all refer to the same area about RTF fields. is this me or is that a flaw in the list?

                  Mark,
Actually the last 18 do....I sent in a "Comment" reply from the help file to notify Alpha of this.----the word "Comment" at the bottom of most help pages is actually a hotspot that enables one to report things to Alpha's documentation people (which seems to be Selwyn for the last 10 or so times I have reported Doc problems---he has responded to each one sent so far by me).

If you actually need to find something relevant to the incorrectly linked ones, use the help index to search for it.

Now, there's a little known secret. I was hoping some day, after saving the help file to disk, I would be able to make my own comments about the subject, for me, personally.
