Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error 4217 Application Not Installed Correctly

I took my application that has ben developed in V8 and running for years and created an new folder with the application files and then installed the new V10 runtime as I did with V8 Runtime. Now I get an error message 4217 Application not installed correctly. No other information just that and it happens even when I try and open the app with the Developer version of V10

You could uninstall the RT and then see if you can open the app. If not, try opening the original folder with the developer.

      Well,

I deleted the foldder and copied all the app files to a new folder. Then as instructed several years ago in V5 I installed the Alpha5 full program into the same folder and then installed the Runtime on top of that. Something about the runtime not havin g all the files needed to run so the purpose of the full install is to place all files in the folder and then installing the runtime replaces the rogram files with the runtime files.

Hell if I know why but it works.

If the apps, the full program and RT are all in the same folder, yes it should work but oofda, what buchs of files. Are they in sub folders or just the one folder? Once the full program is in the folder, why do you need RT in there too? I would not have done it that way but downloaded the most revent version of RT. Mixing apps with the program files is not a good practice.

          Its Simple,

You need the RT to distribute the app. I install the full program in the folder first so that the app will run (Does not seems to work well without doing this) and the install the RT to replace the full program with the needed RT fles for distribution. It may seem odd to you but I've been doing it this way for years and I seel thousands of applications per year with zero problems. I do use a sub folder for the RT andkeep the application in the main folder.

Last year I sold over 856 copies of one of my applications and never had a single problem with any installs on any Windows system including Win 7

I hit the same error 4217 when testing an install on the runtime - traced back to not including one of my .aex files in the package. It would appear that 4217 = component/function not found.

                Ken & John,

I COPY my runtime into a folder on c drive as c:\alda and then COPY the app under that as c:\alda\myapp. I then install the .net and c++ apps. Then register the files as needed to run on whatever system. Been doing this for a long time without problems.

Difference from fred is The app is under the runtime and I do not run it as an install.

**Note** I use astrum installer to do all this. It just makes it simpler for me.
