Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Age in months of birth date to age in futrue

    I am not experienced in code and need some help.
    On a form I want an input field labeled As of Date. A date sometime in the future (like 01/26/2011) will be entered. On another form you enter a birth date in a field and in another field it will show the age in months-the birth date and age are to be stored in a table.

    I have found several examples of calculation age on the message board, but none seem to work the way I envision.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jim

    Jim, I am not clear on what you need. Where does the future date fit in? What is the calculation that you are expecting?

    Later: You might see thread that relates to your needs:

      Re: Age in months of birth date to age in futrue

      The future date is a date set by the show that the animals age is to be calculated from. Example: Show date is 01/26/2011.
      The animal age is to be calculated as of that date. The animal birth date is 06/12/2008-so the animal's age is 31 months of age on 01/26/2011.

      On a form called "Show" you set up the show with name of show and the date of show etc: On a another form called "Entry form" you fill in all of the information about the animal including it's birth date - after it's birth date is entered, another filed is populated with the age in months based on the show date.
      Hope is clear

        Jim, how do you count months? i.e. what's the definition of a month, and how are fractional months considered?

          Re: Age in months of birth date to age in futrue

          Example:
          Birth date 06/12/08
          on 06/12/09 = 12 months
          on 06/12/10 = 12 months
          then there are 7 months until 01/12/2011
          so on 01/26/2011 animal is 31 months of age. Or to be exact 31 months and 14 days- however we don't consider the 14 days. It want be 32 months until 2/12/2011. Fractual months are not considered in age.

            animal_age=12*(year(show_date)-year(DOB)+month(show_date)-month(DOB)+if(day(DOB)>=day(show_date),1,0)

                Re: Age in months of birth date to age in futrue

                The calculated field for animal_age produces errors when using the formula--
                animals_age=12*(year(show_date)-year(DOB))+month(show_date)-month(DOB)+if(day(DOB)>=day(show_date),1,0
                In the table-if the type of DOB is a date and show_date is a date, what type is the results?

                what am I doing wrong?

                  Number, but your fields are character, not date type.

                    The results will be a number- correct?
                    All of the field types in the table are character.
                    and the formula is:
                    animals_age=12*(year(show_date)-year(DOB))+month(show_date)-month(DOB)+if(day(DOB)>=day(show_date),1,0)

                    Still can't get it to work.

                      Jim,

                      Let's take this real slow.

                      The year(), month(), and day() functions operate on date values.
                      The year(), month(), and day() functions do not operate on character values.
                      The year(), month(), and day() functions operate on date values.
                      The year(), month(), and day() functions do not operate on character representations of date values.

                      The return value is numeric. You can't put that in a character field.

                      Any more questions?

                        Thanks for your help and yes I am alittle slow.
                        I have tried with the show_date and DOB as type "date"
                        and the animals_age as "numeric".
                        When you add your formula in the expression for a calculated field for animal_age you get an error of "invalid or incomplete expression"
                        Jim

                          When you add your formula in the expression for a calculated field for animal_age you get an error of "invalid or incomplete expression"
                          Not in my attachment.

                          You do know that when defining a calculated expression for the animals_age field you do not put in the

                          animals_age=

                          portion of the expression. All you need is

                          12*(year(show_date)-year(DOB))+month(show_date)-month(DOB)+if(day(DOB)>=day(show_date),1,0)

                          You may be getting the invalid expression because

                          animals_age=12*(year(show_date)-year(DOB))+month(show_date)-month(DOB)+if(day(DOB)>=day(show_date),1,0)

                          evaluates to a logical true or false.

                            I had the fields type right, but was using animal_age= in the expression. Had a senior moment.
                            It worked fine.
