Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem with Adobe Reader 9.2 and V10 PDF View

I have a problem with V10 PDF viewer and adobe.

Using the v10 sample for Alpha Sports - from the main menu click on pdf viewer. Would appreciate advising if it slow to repspond.

When I do this the pdf takes about five minutes or more to load the customer list (the first one in the browse when the form is activated). Also the form locks up and the window title bar tells me that Alpha is not responding. I have tried it both with the old patch 2639-3575 as well as the new patch 2727-3521. I don't think it is related to the new patch since I tried it with version 9 also and the same thing happens. In version 8 I tried it with the adobe activex component - and again it takes forever to show in adobe activex window.

I am using ver 9.2.0 of adobe reader. On another computer I have an older version of Adobe and it works fine. My computer is runing XP Service Pack 3.

Could someone check this out to confirm. I was wondering if Alpha has a problem with Adobe 9.0 and higher.

    Thanks

      Martin

Thanks for looking at this and confirming that you get the same behavior using Version 10 Alpha Sports dbf.

Just as information, I have tried loading other .PDF files that were not produced by Alpha software and they load fine. It seems that only .pdf's produced under A5V10 and earlier versions, have the problem with Adobe 9.0 and above.

Anyway, I submitted a bug report.

Let's see what they have to say.

      Thanks

I have reported this as a bug last December, unfortunately it was not reproduceable back at HQ.

Here is my Jing, sound is a bit on the quite side. You don't need to watch the whole thing to get the idea.

I did also mention in an email that others have noticed this problem.

This seems to be one of those nasty bugs that is only on certain machines.

          Keith

          Thanks for the reply.

If you have an earlier version of Adobe on your machine (8.0 and updates to that) it works as it should. Go to Adobe 9.0 and higher and it does not work. Seems like Adobe 9 is causing Alpha Problems.

I have Adobe 8.2 on the machine I am using right now and of course it works. I have the Adobe 8 download available so I probably will just install that on my development machine.

Alpha has not replied to my bug report as of this posting, which to me is unusual, unless it is something beyond their capability to fix.

          Again thanks Keith

            Hi Tom,

Thanks for that. I have gone back to the earlier version of Adobe and that has fixed the slow load of the PDF viewer.

As I had reported this as a problem before, I have written again with this new finding.

I have made a test with 9.3 [dutch] that version works fine on my application. Give it a try.

Just received the following from Selwyn

                  please watch video

                  http://screencast.com/t/YzNhZDJlZ

some users have reported that the problem goes away if they downgrade to adobe reader v6.

the issue has nothing to do with a5. we are simply using the microsoft internet explorer active x control and displaying a page that has an iframe which in turn has the pdf file as its source.

the problem lies somewhere with adobe or microsoft
I guess on certain machines - a roll back to a previous version of Adobe is in order. (I had already rolled back to Adobe Reader 8.0 and it works)

Just for the record - although I can confirm the reported behavior described in Alpha Sports, I can also confirm that for PDF files I make myself in Alpha I DO NOT have the issue.

                      Martin

                      Thanks for that input.

I have already removed Adobe 9.2 from my machine and installed Adobe 8.2 and everything works fine.

With your findings, this weekend I will reload Adobe version 9.2 and see if I can view PDF that I have created in Alpha. I know I could view the PDF's I have created outside of alpha using the supercontrol as well as the activeX (A5V8) but I did not try reports that I made with Alpha - oversight on my part.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I'll post my finding here also since it would seem that with your finding it would seem there is something wrong with the example reports in V10.

I wonder if you could have two version of Adobe on the machine at the same time say 8.2 and 9.2 ? There might be registry issues.

Good question - I "think" the answer is yes. Note that I am saving reports as PDF and then opening them. I am NOT using the super control or activex.

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 9.2 and V10 PDF View

I'm using Adobe Reader 7.1.0 and until today when I've tried to view a PDF in Internet Explorer 8 it has been very slow. Then, I've been getting a message saying "Could not find Acrobat External Window handler". However, after clicking OK at the message the PDF would appear in the browser.

Following some instructions on the Adobe web site I checked the Internet settings in Adobe Reader - Edit, Preferences, Internet and found that "Display PDF in a Browser" was not ticked. I ticked this and and now the above message has disappeared and PDFs load instantly in Internet Explorer and in the PDF Super Control.

I thought I'd mention this in case it solves anyone else's problems.

                            Hi Jenny,

                            Thanks for the suggestion.

Reloaded 9.3, made sure PDF in browser was checked, am now back to square one with the slow load.

Back to the previous version again.
