Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Must I run Alpha's runtime install file?

Do I have to install the runtime using the Alpha runtime installation program? In previous versions, I could just copy the files out of the installation on my development machine. The reason I ask is that I am getting some strange errors on moving to version 10. Here is the first.

I am running this on Windows XP. When I print preview a report, I get an error that says:
    Script:a5_get_stored_menus2 line:18
Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10\Installations\CEstimator\a_menus_system.dbf: The system cannot find the file specified.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version10\Installations\CEstimator\a_menus_system.dbf

Nothing has changed in the code except the runtime version. I was using version 8, now version 10. The program runs fine on my development version. I only get this error on a clean install where I copy my runtime files rather than run Alpha's runtime installation program.

My other error is that I get an "invalid table handle" in a script that has a valid handle on the line indicated. How do I fix that?!

    Howard,

No you don't need to install runtime using the Alpha runtime installation program. Copying the files should work, but I think you still need to register a couple of the .DLL files just like V8. Runtime should automatically copied the a_menu* files on first run.

Try running the runtime a5.exe with administrative rights for the first time and see if that solves the errors.

Yes you need to register all the codejock*.ocx (there about 4), the a5controls.dll, the a5contexteval.dll when you copy. You should be able to use the regserver comd from the run prompt EG type the following line in the windows run dialog

regsvr32 [path to file] + file name

If the path is C:\alpha5 thenit would be regsvr32 C:\alhpa5\a5contexteval.dll to register that file and so on

Re: Must I run Alpha's runtime install file?

I made sure that I had registered those files, but I still got the errors. So I tried installing the runtime with Alpha's installer and the error's went away.

So, I have a question for Alpha Software. Why did you change the way the runtime behaves? And more importantly, why did you not document this with the instructions that come with the runtime?

Re: Must I run Alpha's runtime install file?

I use a third party install software to do installs. All I do is have the runtime files copied by it to a directory that I tell it to go and then I register those controls. That was on advice from Alpha. I have noted on occasions that when I install to the User area of the computer that this can get into conflict with admin rights. You might think you have full rights but sometimes don't. If I simply install to a directory or the program file directory I have no issues

Re: Must I run Alpha's runtime install file?

I use batch files to install, and the last thing in the batch file is to run another batch file that has the following lines (check the paths for your system)

            regsvr32.exe "c:\alpha\a5v10 runtime\a5controls.dll" /s
            regsvr32.exe "c:\alpha\a5v10 runtime\A5ContextEval.dll" /s
            regsvr32.exe "c:\alpha\a5v10 runtime\Codejock*.ocx" /s
            regsvr32.exe "c:\alpha\a5v10 runtime\SimpleChart4Lite.dll" /s
