Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Find by key issue

I have noticed this same issue too. In version 4.5 which I use, and v9, it returns the found record at the top of the list. In v5 and v10, it returns the found record in the middle of the list. I like it at the top better. Same thing happens when a new record is added to the list. V4.5 and V9 puts the new record at the top. V5 and v10 puts it in the middle of the list. I don't know about other versions. These are the versions I have.

    Re: Find by key issue

Remember that find by key is not a query. With the table in a specified key order, find by key just positions the record pointer at the first record that matches the search string. All records in the table are still available for scrolling.

The difference that has occured in v10 is that the display of the first record to match the search string is now in the middle of the browse vs, at the top. But all the same records are available for scrolling.

    Re: Find by key issue

ok, thanks bill. doesn't make sense to me that it would return the first value in the middle of the browse. why would i want any records returned that weren't relevant to what i queried?

    Re: Find by key issue

I read it wrong. I thought you were saying find by key went to the middle of the key range, but you said the middle of the displayed browse. Yes, it does that now. Sometimes Alpha has added an option for "classic" view when a number of users express a preference for the previous style.

    Gary,
I can not find back where I read it but I am sure I read somewhere that this was a design change. The behavior I see here is that if the record is already visible in the browse then the display does not change, otherwise as you say the found record goes to the middle of the browse.

i've been using 2736_3523 and my text import has been fine. it's a csv file with half million records.

the find by key issue happens in whatever database i'm in, whether it's one of mine or alphasports.

Speaking of text import. You might try build 2515_3506 and see if it works there, because my text import does, but not in recent builds.

And I have stuff that works in other versions of A5 also, but not v10. (See the recent thread about text import.)

All I am saying is that it is good to go back to square one when something does not work in a new version. Better yet, be able to show it in Alpha Sports.

First thing I would do is rebuild indexes and try find by key in the default browse.
