Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Restrict access to parent form while child form open?

    I want to keep the user from making changes to the parent form while the child form is open. I thought by setting the child form to modal this would keep them from returning to the parent form, but I can close the parent form without any problems with this setting.

    I didn't really want to hide the parent form in case they wanted to refer to the data on it.

    I assume you are using Action Scripting to open the child form. Check to options tab of the action script genie, window style, and set the style to dialog.
    There can be only one.

      Actually, I'm not.

      I'm using the following code.

      form.load()
      form.show()
      form.activate()

      The reason I'm doing this is because I've got some code to pass some data from my parent table to the child table. The code is between the load() and the show().

      Just noticed that I can do this in the load(). Thanks for the nudge...

        This is weird...

        Here is the code in my "Edit" button on the parent table.

        Code:
        ' IF FIXES FORM IS NOT LOADED
        if .NOT. is_object("Fixes") then
           Form.load("Fixes","Dialog")
        end if

        ' PUT IN EDIT RECORD MODE
        Fixes.Change_Mode()

        ' now assign PK of the primary table to that record
        Fixes:pk_app.value = parentform:pk.value

        dim t_fixes as p
        t_fixes = table.current(4)
        Fixes:section.value = t_fixes.section
        Fixes:desc.value = t_fixes.desc

        '  SHOW THE FORM
        Fixes.show()

        '  SET FOCUS TO IT
        Fixes.activate()
        And here is the code in my "Cancel" button on the child form:

        Code:
        topparent.cancel()
        topparent.close()
        The problem is that I need to click the Cancel button twice to get the form to close. What am I doing wrong?

        I discovered a little more information. When I click the Cancel button the first time, it is just canceling the "Edit" mode. I can tell by the Status bar. When I click it again, it closes the form.

        This same behavior is exhibited if I click the red X to close the form.

          This is the Action script code for close form changing the parentfrom.commit() to cancel(). Try it, see what happens.

          Code:
          'Close current form or browse window.
          DIM mode as c
          mode = parentform.mode_get()
          'If the form is in Enter or Change mode, first save the changes before closing the form
          if mode = "ENTER" .or. mode = "CHANGE" then
             parentform.cancel()
             'Check to see if the record was successfully saved
             if parentform.mode_get()<>"VIEW" then
                ui_msg_box("Unable to save your changes","Please correct and save, or discard your changes", UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
                end
             end if
          end if
          'Close the form
          parentform.close(.f.)

            It's a timing issue.
            Change to:
            Code:
            topparent.cancel()
            xbasic_wait_for_idle()
            topparent.close()
