Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I am running A5 V10 and I have a database which consists of the following sets:

    Classes
    Instructors
    Students

I am trying to load the data into each set from an Excel Workbook. there are 2,198 Classes in the spreadsheet, 90 Instructors and 7,168 Students.

I go through the Import Operation for each, with mapping the data elements. The right number of classes get imported into Classes, the correct number of Instructors get imported into Instructors, but when I do the exact same thing to import the Students data from the spreadsheet I only get 488 imported (see screenshot). Interesting thing is that when I do the exact same import but into a new Table, it brings in all 7,168.

Also, prior to importing into the existing Students Table, I've emptied and packed the table. I've validated that there isn't anything in the table prior to trying the import.

So, is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks,

    Ben

Different data types in A5's interpretation of the Excel columns that's blocking import of all the records maybe? If you compare the data structure of the successful import to a new table with your existing table, are there differences in the field types, such as character versus numeric? I've had problems before getting all Excel data into a table when a table field is defined as character and the Excel spreadsheet column is numeric. When I appended a single quote in front of the cell values to turn it into character values, then everything imported correctly.

The import processes take their clues from the data in the first line in the spreadsheet. Another way to accomplish forcing spreadsheet data to be imported as a specific type is to insert a line under the column headings and enter an "a" or a 0 (zero) in each cell depending on what you want. That record is then deleted after the import.

Not a better way, just another way.

I went back and took a look at the new Table and what I found was that everywhere I had either a SSN# or a Telephone Number it created the field as an Exponent Field vs a Character Field as is in the original Table.

Stan, can you explain a little more about what you wrote regarding the "a" or 0 (zero). I'm not familiar with this, I'm still a newbie learning my way around.

        Thanks,

        Ben

BTW, I went back in and did another import after I found that in my age field it was stopping at record 488 which had an age of -553 because someone had transposed the birth year. I corrected it and then all the records imported, interesting that the Age field in the Table was a Number 3 and it quit importing just as soon as it saw the -553.

The Alpha DAO import allows you to override the field definitions.

You need to do that to get the fields defined that way that you need them.

Suppose you have a spreadsheet in the form of attachment "before".

Alpha will try to import all columns except C as numeric.

Make the change shown in attachment "after" and Alpha will only import column B as numeric.
