Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to display the data on Excel

    For A5V10, Is it possible if it can transfer or move the result of calculate field to the embeded Excel. For example if the result from calculate field is 5.0 on the report and and pass its value to the embeded Excel (cell A1) that also display on the same report.

    Thanks

    Re: How to display the data on Excel

    Hi Peter,

    If the field is in the table then the will be exported out to Excel. If it is a calculated field on a form or in a browse then it wont.

    Give it a try and see what you get.

      Thank you for your quick reply, Keith

      Is it possible if I move or copy the data in the field to display in some cell of Excel on the report.?
      Just only one field and one cell of Excel (calculate field has the result is 5.0 and I want it display in Excel in cell A1 )
      and both calculate field and Excel can display in the same report

      I want to do this because I want to use some feature of Excel without coding more command.

        Hi Peter,

        I'm afraid you have lost me now. I don't know what you are talking about or what you are trying to do.

        Once you put data into a spreadsheet you can do what you want with it.

          If you want to pass values in Alpha 5 to an excel sheet you can use this DDE method shown below.
          You can either pass fields from a table or pass on variables which could of course include calculated fields.

          The example below shows a few different field types being poked to the sheet, numeric fields are being converted to a string in this example.

          There are other examples on the board for DDE with excel that will give you a broader view of whats possible.

          Code:
          var->xisofilename="c:\example.xls"
          sys_open(var->xisofilename)
          dde.send("Excel","Sheet1","R2C2","Q"+var->xq)
          dde.send("Excel","Sheet1","R3C2",UPPER(RTRIM(tbl_quote->Company)))
          dde.send("Excel","Sheet1","R4C2",UPPER(RTRIM(tbl_quote->job_name)))
          dde.send("Excel","Sheet1","R5C2",str(tbl_quote->units,10,0))

            Hi Keith,

            My point is I have a report. I can use the calculate field and show its value in the report with no problem. I want to pass value from calculate field to an Excel to display the amount in word (I can use the amount in word with excel in my langquage with no problem) and want to display the cell of Excell embeded on the same report
            to display the amount in number with calculate field and the amount in word with excel and display in the same time on the same report but the problem is I don't know how to pass the value form A5V10 field to the cell of sheet of Excel.

                Re: How to display the data on Excel

                I am also interested in the answer to this. I have a form that the user inputs variable/record ranges. Then the form calls up several reports that do calculations. I'd like to copy the calculated values in the report to an excel sheet. Saving the reports as an Excel sheet is not working well due to formatting issues.

                What Chris suggests (dde.send) sounds very promising. However, I am not sure where to code that in a report...

                Any suggestions?

                Thanks,

                Inanc

                  Re: How to display the data on Excel

                  Anything you code in Alpha is triggered by an event. Reports have

                  Event Name
                  Occurs When

                  OnPrintInit
                  Before the report begins to print and at the beginning of preview.

                  OnRecord
                  After each detail record has printed.

                  OnPrintExit
                  After the report has finished printing. In the case of print preview, when the user closes the print preview window.
                  There can be only one.

                    Re: How to display the data on Excel

                    I put the following in a copy of the AlphaSports customer List report after creating a calculated field

                    comb = trim(customer->Firstname)+" "+trim(customer->Lastname)

                    Onprintinit:

                    Code:
                    var->xisofilename="c:\example.xls"
                    sys_open(var->xisofilename)
                    dde_session = dde.open("excel", "system")
                    Onrecord:

                    Code:
                    dde.send("Excel","Sheet1","R"+alltrim(str(mrecno()))+"C2","Name: "+calc->comb)
                    Onpintexit:

                    Code:
                    dde_session.close()
                    Screenshot shows sample of excel file (created empty example.xls before report was run) output.
                    There can be only one.
