Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ftp_put_file_modal() Closes All Open Files!!!

    I have determined that FTP_PUT_FILE_MODAL() and FTP_PUT_FILE() closes all open tables when it runs. Is this a HUGE bug???

    This is absolutely disastrous for my purposes because I am writing an application that has to update various files to a number of different FTP sites. Closing the files means that I have to keep track of where I'm at and re-open every file (there are 4 open) after every transfer.

    Tell me I'm doing something wrong... please.

    You're doing something wrong, almost guaranteed! But how can the message board help if you don't tell us how you determined this or post some sample code? Tell us what patch you are using, etc.

      Ira

      Sorry, but as I stated, you can easily duplicate this in the interactive window. Here is a code fragment that is very, very similar to what I have in my function to transfer files to an FTP site. The only difference is that in my function, it references the data in a file instead of being typed into the FTP_PUT_FILE_MODAL() function.

      Naturally, I substituted asterisks for the user name and password in the code below.

      Also, the code after the FTP_PUT_FILE_MODAL() function is the same as before, but because the file has been closed, it errors out.

      The following was typed in the interactive window.

      The file containing my FTP info is FTP_INFO and the field containing the URL of the FTP site is FTP_URL.

      Code:
      t_ftpinfo = table.open("ftp_info")
      ? t_ftpinfo.FTP_URL
      = "proware.zftp.com                                  "

      ftp_put_file_modal("proware.zftp.com","*************","************","c:\a5apps\ftp_transfer_program\new_ak25.mem","/home/proware/www/ak_updates/new_ak25.mem")

      ? t_ftpinfo.fetch_next()
      ERROR: Not an open table

      I hope I'm wrong, but I tried this with FTP_PUT_FILE() and FTP_PUT_FILE_MODAL() and had the same results.

      Any help appreciated. BTW, the file uploads to the FTP site just fine.

        Can someone confirm this behavior and then let me know if this is "just the way it works" or a "bug". I'm at a dead end until I know which way to go - report it as a bug or spend a huge amount of time working around it.

          Just use this to keep it open.

          t_ftpinfo = table.open("ftp_info")
          t_ftpinfo.persist()
          'rest of script

            Thanks Stan. Didn't know there was such a command.

              Glad it helped even if it shouldn't be needed.

              Many time the entries under SEE ALSO in the help files can lead you to useful information. For the table.open() entry you are led to Table Functions and Methods where the link to persist() can be found. Other fun stuff located on the same page.

                After running tests, I determined that the FTP_PUT_FILE_MODAL() is a wrapper function that after a few more wrapper levels eventually ends up at FTP_SCRIPT_RUN().

                In there Alpha 5 uses a number of FTP commands like ftp.event_run() and one of them (all "c" code) closes the table.

                So, it does in fact close tables in the current session (thread), even if run in a background thread. There may be a reason for this, but I kind of doubt it.

                So my take is that it is a bug.

                The tablepointer.persist() function will keep it active, as Stan has pointed out, so you can use that.

                  Re: Ftp_put_file_modal() Closes All Open Files!!!

                  I agree with Ira and Stan. I don't use the MODAL command only the FTP_PUT and FTP_PUT_MULTIPLE. Bothe work well and do not close my files, which I need to keep open.

                  A possible workaround would be to put some code in to copy out the data you need to another file, then FTP it. That might be a little cleaner and might help prevent corruption. That's what I would worry about witht an open file.
