Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Developer Resources

I used this a lot when I started with alpha to learn how to do updates to database I created. Let me know what files I needed to copy. Maybe a new section on the Links page called "Documentation" or "Resources"

        Re: Developer Resources

Here is a question and a suggestion:

I threw a question out on the message board some time ago and it received no responses on Transact SQL role/importance? How much focus should be placed there or is the business logic better handled in XBasic? I haven't seen much of any mention of this and if it is better to focus on XBasic then great but it would be nice to have an opinion?

Also, after collecting the resources would it be possible to organize them into a framework of learning that provides a recommendation for what resource to focus on, when and why?

I sometimes feel I'm not being very efficient in my progress.

Regardless thank you for your efforts in this.

          Kim,

Totally agree - I think as we collect resources in one spot they can be put in to a logical order. There is so much to learn now to be a 'complete developer'.

What do you mean Transact SQL role VS Xbasic?
Give some example that you are thinking about.

              Re: Developer Resources

I am using MS-SQL db for backend and when incorporating calculated fields, trigger, and reporting... SQL can do this very well and it is necessary to have a good knowledge of Transact-SQL if these functions are to be handled within SQL. If the business logic is going to handled by A5 then a knowledge of XBasic seems to be a higher priority.

              Here is an example:
Table1 contains many transactions for one client. I will need to produce a statistical report for the client that will need to create and execute numerous queries on table1 and places the results in respective fields of table2. Then I would like to use something like A5 Fusions Charts to be able to produce the respective reports with graphics.

Because this will be my first time at the plate for this my questions are not only how to do this, but where is this best executed???

Later on I will take this application and build a business intelligence application from it.

              Does that help?

                Re: Developer Resources

You should go with which is easier for you.

Trans-SQL is what you know best then use that. With that being said in Alpha you could.

1-You could with Xbasic on a page(page with sqlcode.a5w redirect to the "GRID page) run code to do the sql update from table 1 to table 2 on the page you have before the page with the grid on it.
thus you would get the transactions you want.

2- You could create a search function that when you search for the transactions it does the pull for you put under events on grid
BEFORESEARCH EVENT. This event fires after the user clicks the 'Search' button on the Search Part of the Grid. It allows you to modify the data submitted by the Search Part before the search is actually performed.

You can examine the values in the search fields by referencing the 'SearchDataSubmitted' variable. For example, if 'Lastname' is one of the search fields, then you can see what value the user entered into this field by examining SearchDataSubmitted.Lastname. If you make a change to this variable, you can, in effect, change the value that the Grid will search for.

3-In v10 you could use function "OnGridInitialize as v (e as p)" This under the events on the grid.

there maybe other places to put the code you may need.
Many ways to do on Alpha side.

                :)

                  Nicholas,
Thank you for the response and recomendations I will be working on this function in the near future. I may give you a ping or two on this then.

                  Thanks Again!
