Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Databases running slow

    Hello-

    We are running an terminal server Intel Quad Core Xeon Process with 3.60GHz and 8 GIG of ram. We have 1 CPU consistently running high and we ask other users to log off of Alpha 5, that CPU balances out. Does anyone have any ideas or possible fixes for this?

    Thanks-

    To get an idea I would restart the whole system and start up the users one by one looking what's going on.
    Anyway ask an experienced system operator for help.

    Most things are simple but unfortunately only after the first time

      check out the feature where you could assign users to specific processors - usually not neccessary but worth a try

        Hello-

        Thank you for your replies. However, according to our IT, we are unable to assign specific users out to specific processors and the server restarts every weekend.

        I appreciate your input and suggestions. :)

          I do not know about v9 or v10 but v8 will only use the first processor. It does not let the OS select the processor with the least load like a lot of software does (Quickbooks) I set up my version where the first user that logs in gets the first processor, second get second and one then starts over to try and keep load on processors even. Using SetPrimaryProcessor() In now looking at help using SelectBestProcessor() may be a better/easier option

          Added later. In looking at my code it looks like I tested with SelectBestProcessor() but I did not use it. May be it did not work like I had expected or ??? Not sure why I did not use.

            As I think about it, that feature would only work with T/S or Citrix, not a shadowed ADB.

            But the load at the server is supposed to be auto handled by the OS.

              Alpha5 would only use the first processor (0) and would not let the OS change it to where the least load was. There is a thread were I think Alpha responded to this back when I was having problems. I will try and find it.

                Re: Databases running slow

                One of colleagues has inserted the following code in the Autoexec of our main application to share the load when being run under Terminal Services on a multi core processor server and it did show some speed improvements.

                '**** Share multi-session processing load across cpu cores - Start
                'Get runtime active user count
                dim RTUserMuf as C
                dim RTUsers as N
                RTUserMuf = file.filename_parse(a5.get_name() ,"dpn") + ".rmuf"
                RTUsers = a5_registration_license_inuse(RTUserMuf)

                'Select CPU core based on above count
                Dim global Cores as N
                Dim global CoreInUse as N
                Cores=cpucount()
                Select
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=0
                CoreInUse=1
                setPrimaryProcessor(1)
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=1
                CoreInUse=2
                setPrimaryProcessor(2)
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=2
                CoreInUse=3
                setPrimaryProcessor(3)
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=3
                CoreInUse=4
                setPrimaryProcessor(4)
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=4
                CoreInUse=5
                setPrimaryProcessor(5)
                case mod(RTUsers,cpucount())=5
                CoreInUse=6
                setPrimaryProcessor(6)
                end select
                '**** Share processing load across cpu cores - End

                Please feel free to try and please report back.

                  Am going to try this on a T/S install - wonder why he made global variables - since they are unique to each session.

                    The reason for dimming the variables as global was for testing purposes and we display on the opening screen which core is being used in that session.

                          Dave, where I have from maybe 5 to 10 concurrent XP workstations shadowed to a Server 2003 server with 2 Zeon Chips (4 processors), are you saying that this will assign the processor on the SERVER?

                            No, where you have multiple instances of the same application executing on a single machine it will share the workload between the processor cores on that machine.
