The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Losing data: kinda long reads like a story

    I have v10,build 2783-3536. I have a form based on a set with two child tables, both with one to many links and one of the child tables with a granchild table with a one to many link. Actually, it is a "customer" table, linked to a "sales" table and a "repair_invoice" table by "customer_id" and a "repair_ item" table linked to the "repair_invoice" table by "invoice_no". I used this same set along with a similar form with my old version of 4.5 and it worked just fine. I have been using this form for several weeks now. The form shows the customer information, and a browse with the sales information, another browse with the repair info along with a browse showing the repair items for the repair invoice header. Today I was on the phone with a customer about a problem with his dishwasher. I looked up the customer. It showed the sales info about the dishwasher(model, serial, date of purchase and so on) and also the info on a repair I had done for him on his washing machine. His phone number had changed so I started to change his phone number. As soon as I started to type in the new phone number, his sales info changed from a dishwasher to an air conditioner and the repair item I used on his washing machine, a lid switch , changed to a convergence module. I asked the guy to give me the serial number off his dishwasher. I did a query for the serial number and it wasn't in my database. Luckily I still had my old 4.5 version on another computer and I looked up the information and re-entered it.I found that v10 had taken the data from the the next consecutive "customer_id" and inserted it in place of the sales data for the customer I had just looked up and had taken the data in the next consecutive repair item "invoice_no" and inserted it in place of the repair_item data of the customer I had looked up, and had completely did away with the original data. It didn't affect the data in the two tables from which the data came from. It was still there. It seems it just copied the data from the other tables and put it in the browses I had showing. The strange thing is, I have changed or edited data on this form before, but I never, or at least I have never noticed, this kinda of behavior before. I went back to a couple of customers I remember having changed information on before and everything was ok. Now this is just basic stuff. Tables, sets and forms. Things alpha should do well and has in past versions. I am kinda of gun shy right now. I guess I will not be editing any more information on this form. Especially the data from the parent table. I have referential integerity on, I have read in forums past this could cause a problem. Anyone have any suggestions? I also noticed there is a new patch available, I might try that.

    That sounds like a linking problem, not any sort of lost data. If the data is still there but the link is corrupted you were seeing the wrong child/grandchild record linked to the current parent record. It doesn't sound to me like anything was copied or overwritten.

    Imagine if you manually changed the linking fields in existing child records to another valid parent linking value and again viewed your form. The wrong info would display attached the parent. If the linking index is not working you would see the same thing.

    Where the source of the problem lies I can't say.
    There can be only one.

      No the data was gone. It was overwritten with data from the next record.As I said in my previous post, I queried the sales table for the original serial number of the customers dishwasher. No record was found. There was no links involved in this search. The first thing I did when I saw this behaviour was to go to the control panel and update the indexes, because I thought just like you did.

        Well I'm home now so I decided to see if the same behaviour exhibited itself on my copy of the database in question. I have v10 2787-3538 here. Sure enough, when I started to edit any field in the customer information part of the form the sales record browse information changed to the information in the next customer id number.If I stopped and clicked on cancel changes the original browse information returned. Now keep this in mind that I have been using this database for a few weeks now and I have never noticed this happening. I looked at the set this form was based on. I noticed I had referential integerity on with cascade changes and deletes. I switched to prevent changes and the odd behaviour stopped. The only odd behaviour happening now, and this was also happening before, is when I edit a field in the customer information part of the form, if there is a repair record for this customer showing, it disappears until I save my changes and then it reappears. The sales information browse always shows.
