Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    missing reports

I have a master report that I wish to copy for individual reports for each month. There is a text field in the report which needs to be edited for each month. After copying and making the edit I wish to save the report. I get a message "zip: nothing to do". It will not save the report and when I try to close it I can only close it by choosing the option to not save. OK, it won't save, I close it annd then try to reopen it. Message reads "Error Read past end of file occurred while trying to start application" I then delete the report and try to redo it using either the duplicate or copy to options using the same name and it tells me "A layout with this name already exists in the Target Table or Set" There is no report layout showing with that name but I cannot use the same name.
I have used various releases and get the same error messages. currently using the 3538 release.

    Re: missing reports

Steve, without overwriting previous backups I'd recommend you do another backup and then reboot your machine. Then post another message telling us what errors you encounter. Try to write without using the word "it". We can't tell from your first post whether "it" refers to the master report, the duplicate report, Alpha Five itself, or something else altogether.

In general it's often not necessary to create separate monthly report layouts. Your needs may be different, but many find that working with a single report is much easier. Instead of embedding static text in each monthly report, a variable is dropped into the report layout. The script that calls the report sets the variable text just before calling the report. The same script can filter the records for the desired date range also. It's not necessary to hard code separate monthly filters into 12 different report layouts, if you see what I mean.

      Re: missing reports

I still had the same problems as before. The child reports would disappear and give me the same messages. I am using hard coded reports due to the level of computer expertise of the end users. They have used this for the same way for over 10 years and are comfortable with it. In addition they sometime have secondary users with even less expertise.
I can see the advantages of using a script but I am not that far along in my Alpha development. I am working with Susan Bush's book and hopefully will get some experience there.
In the meantime I did manage too get all the reports created that I wanted and saved.
Still not addressed are why the reports disappeared in the first place. I found several mentions of it made on the forum and tried the things that were suggested without any luck. I would feel more comfortable if this did not happen. I also moved back to release 3522. I also have Version 7 and tried working with it on the reports, had some of the same problems but managed to muddle through. The client is running Version 7 and I needed to make sure it would work for them. There is nothing in Version 10 that would be of benefit to them without changing the way things are done. They are comfortable with it and I'm not rocking the boat.

            Tom,
If I send you the zip file with some data wouuld you be willing to show me the code that would do the variable?
