Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XML output with write_line()

    I have to create an xml file that is not in the format that alpha five exports in using table.xml_export( ). I know I can use fil.write_line(" <firstname>") to format the text as I need it but the problem is some of the text I need to format includes quotes as part of the text. example:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

    Since above text already has quotes in fil.write_line does not work properly because you can only use one set of quotes. How do I use fll.write() to write to a file text that includes quotes as part of the data to write.

    Re: XML output with write_line()

    While you can use file.write for this, I found that it was easier to use (in V5) save_to_file or, in V10, file.from_string(). The reason was that when creating XML strings there is usually a lot of pre-processing (like encoding characters for submission) to get the string into the correct format. So I decided to create the string in memory, then modify and validate it before writing the entire string to disk.

    So, assuming that you will string together the individual pieces that will eventually comprise the entire xml string you could start with

    Code:
    submit_string = "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" ?>"
    next_node = "Another string"
    submit_string = submit_string + Crlf() + next_node
    and so on. Up to a save_to_file(submit_string,filename).

      Since subtleties are often lost on me, let me mention that Finian's code uses the backslash character to "escape" the quote marks. This is mentioned in the help file section called "Adding Quote Characters" in the help file topic "Writing Expressions".

        I will give your method a try. I did try the following and it seems to work OK.

        I used a template of an XML document to help write most of the XML code.

        'the following reads a properly formatted XML file and saves it 'to the variable cc. (top section)
        cc = file.to_string("C:\Database\t1.xml")
        'the following reads a properly formatted XML file and saves it 'to the variable xx. (end section)
        xx = file.to_string("C:\Database\t2.xml")
        'I then create a new file with the cc string.
        file.append("C:\Database\DWB\JAFIS\t3.xml",cc)
        ' I then append the following to end of the file t3.xml
        ' <field id="Case ID *" mapId="caseID">Case12345</field>
        ' The following is the method I used to append the above text
        file.append("C:\Database\t3.xml","<field id="+S_QUOTE("Case ID ")+" mapId="+S_QUOTE("caseID")+">newcase123</field>")
        ' I then appended the end section(xx) of the properly formatted 'to the new file t3.xml
        file.append("C:\Database\DWB\JAFIS\t3.xml",xx)

        Let me know if missed anything.

          Re: XML output with write_line()

          It's not necessarily how I would have done it and hard coding those path/file names makes portability a problem but, if the code works as you want and the resulting xml is what you need, then all's well.

            s_quote() quotes a variable for use in Xbasic, which means it will not always be proper XML syntax. You should instead use the backslash escape, chr(34) or quote()
