Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Exporting to a Variable File Name

    I created a simple export of trecords from a table selected by an ask variable. The file exports to the designated file name set up in the export operation. How can I take the selection criteria (Invoice Number) and use that to name the exported file at the end of the export script?

    Convert the operation to xbasic, show us the xbasic, we can show you how to modify it.

      Re: Exporting to a Variable File Name

      Stan,

      Here is the xbasic code for the script I was trying to create to take the variable and rename the export file.

      'This is the argument that is passed to the evaulate_template_private() function
      xbasic_code = <<%code%
      export_filename = "c:\transfers\exporttransfers.csv"
      'Prompt for any ASK variables in filter/order expressions......
      ask_vars = <<%list%
      Askc_Invoice_Number

      %list%
      prompt_result = a5_prompt_for_ask_vars(ask_vars,session_variables(session_get()))
      if prompt_result <> "OK" then
      end
      end if
      'Fields from one-many child tables have been selected for export. This flag controls
      'whether A5 exports just one instance of each parent record, or one parent record for each
      'one-many child record.
      export.fetch_parent = .f.

      table.reset("transfers.set")
      a_tbl = table.current()

      ON ERROR GOTO ERROR22032010211543000

      DIM a5_operation_order as C
      a5_operation_order = "RECNO()"
      query.order = a5_operation_order
      DIM a5_operation_filter as C
      a5_operation_filter = "flattenquery(Foodtrans->Invoice_Number=Var->askC_Invoice_Number)"
      query.filter = a5_operation_filter
      query.options = "I"
      query.Description = "Temporary Query"
      i_indx = a_tbl.query_create()

      export.type = 0
      export.names = .F.
      export.file = export_filename
      export.options = ""
      export.field_sep = ","
      export.record_sep = "<CR><LF>"
      export.fields = 10
      export.field1 = "trans_header->invoice_number"
      export.field2 = "trans_header->department"
      export.field3 = "foodtrans->item"
      export.field4 = "foodtrans->description"
      export.field5 = "foodtrans->unit"
      export.field6 = "foodtrans->date"
      export.field7 = "foodtrans->qty"
      export.field8 = "foodtrans->price"
      export.field9 = "foodtrans->subclass"
      export.field10 = "foodtrans->class"

      a_tbl.export()

        Replace the section in red.

        Code:
        'This is the argument that is passed to the evaulate_template_private() function
        xbasic_code = <<%code%
        [COLOR="Red"]export_filename = "c:\transfers\exporttransfers.csv"

        %list%
        prompt_result = a5_prompt_for_ask_vars(ask_vars,session_variables(session_get()))
        if prompt_result <> "OK" then

        end if[/COLOR]
        'Fields from one-many child tables have been selected for export. This flag controls
        with this.

        Code:
        export_filename = "c:\transfers\*~*~*~.csv"
        'Prompt for any ASK variables in filter/order expressions......

        prompt_result = a5_prompt_for_ask_vars(ask_vars,session_variables(session_get()))
        if prompt_result <> "OK" then
        end
        end if

          Re: Exporting to a Variable File Name

          You probably should have some minor validation that values were entered for the ask variables.....

          if prompt_result <> "OK" then
          end
          end if
          'new section
          if alltrim(Askc_Invoice_Number) = "" .or. alltrim(Askc_Filename_For_Export) = ""
          ui_msg_box("Alert","Incomplete entry.")
          end
          end if
          'end new section

          export_filename = strtran(export_filename,"*~*~*~",Askc_Filename_For_Export)
          There can be only one.
