Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Missing script

I created a script to faciliate a task and then used the AS play script as one of my steps in series of 4 steps. This task is the third step. Everything works fine so there is no issue with the script. If I view the step as xbasic in the AS script it is simply a script_play() line.- which is correct

What I want to do is cut and paste a part of this script into another to save me time. here is the problem - it is not in the code list at all. It works but is not there??? Am I missing something here. I even pulled up a backup from a few weeks back. The sript works but it is not in the code list. How can it be working? Is there a secret place for scripts that I should know about?

    Mark,
I understand your frustrasion, but really some more detail for us to get a real handle on what you are experiencing. Can you share the code that is causing you the grief? It is hard to know what exactly this mean:
The sript works but it is not in the code list.
    Thanks

        Re: Missing script

I can't give you the code as it does not exist in the code list, but it works. The script cannot be seen. The issue is not the code as it does what I want it to do. The issue is that I cannot open it in design as I cannot see it.

        Checking the directory I have two spurious files - $$900700.FPT & $$0F380F.MPX

Mark, what about Mike's idea? Did you compile your scripts into a library (aex) and the delete them ?

How long has it been since you closed Alpha Five and rebooted your machine?

            Re: Missing script

often new functions will not show up until you exit and reopen Alpha. this may also be the issue here

when, where, and how is this new script called? does it have a name?

Your responses are very devoid of exact details, so you can be helped. Show us some code, send us a zip of the database, etc.

But you say "it is not in the code list"? We interpreting that as not appearing on the Code tab of the A5 Control Panel. Are you looking at something else. or a list some other way? Is this action script on a form or other layout?

                Re: Missing script

Sorry about the delay - was away again. Here are some pics to try and show what the problem is.

Codeexplorer.jpg show the scripts I have - note that there is no script called "Loan Receipt"

AScript.jpg shows the action script with all the steps to perform. I have highlighted the line where it calls the "Loan receipt" script

xbasicview.jpg shows an xbasic view of the line.

view.jpg shows the result when that line is called.

I believe I should be getting an error as the script has disappeared from the code explorer. I have not created any "AEX" as I have not learnt about that yet

                  Re: Missing script

                  Hi Mark,

My best guess is that at sometime in the past in this database, you changed the name of Loan Receipt, and it most likely at that point had an error in the code that did not "re-compile" the code. In Alpha Five, scripts and functions on the code tab have their source code, and their compiled code stored in the database's alb, alx, & alm files.

By changing the name, it might have, unintentionally, renamed 1 and effectively not the other. Maybe a weird character in the new name or something possibly. And if there is an error in the current script, the stored compiled version is not updated. So it may be there, and under a different name, or invisible, yet the old compiled version is still there. If you Zip up your database's alb, alx and alm file I can take a quick look.

And just a comment for you about your code tab list. It appears as if you have many repetitive scripts out there that could be replaced with a single function that has a parameter, eg. Locate Con 1, Locate Con 2 etc, so you may want to study creation of functions.

Also, many of your scripts have spaces in their name. While this is allowed for scripts, for a variety of reasons, it's a real bad idea. Instead use the "_" underscore character.

Yes you are right - it was me all along. I thought I would have duplicated it - but I renamed instead. Found it by accident when working on another section. Sorry to put up a rash post

Thanks Tim - banana benders always enjoy the Mexican colloquialism. You would have issues too if you had just spent two weeks working with the military in downtown leach infested Tully where the average rainfall is 4.5m per year. Because of the recent cyclones I think we got it all in the two weeks. Go the dees!
