Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Rule to choose only one checkbox out of 5

I've been trying to write a rule that will only allow 1 checkbox out of 5 to be selected but I'm having a mental block. Any suggestions.

    Example
I have 5 Checkboxes and one of them is on (or all are off)
Then user has to choose another of the 5 checkboxes.

Is there a way to automatically uncheck any of the other 4 so that only 1 of 5 is choosen at any given time.

Usually this requires a "single payer" system. ;) IOWs, if only one choice is valid in any given record, you may only need one field, in which case you could use a radio button. OTOH, if you really do need 5 fields, you could write a loop and put it in each checkbox's OnChange event. Use a naming convention like checkbox1...checkbox5. Then get the parent object name and evaluate it to test for .T. (I'm assuming logical field type) and mark the 4 others as .F.

Sounds like you need a radio button instead of a series of check boxes.

Why not just have one filed like Peter suggested and make it a drop down list of only valid choices.

If I knew from the start this would be the case, i would have designed it that way. As this is a work in progress, additional conditions were added which resulted in additional checkboxes.

So now that we're up to 5, I'm not sure what to do.

Radio Buttons are certainly the answer. Not sure how I could transfer T and F data from CheckBoxes into the Radio buttons.

As I mentioned, since this was an evolvng form, I started with only 2 Checkboxes which turned into 5 and now an additional condition of only allowing one to be checked.

              Try this.
              There can be only one.

That's GREAT work Stan. Very good suggestion. Once I get a chance to review how you did this, I'd like to implement it. Well Done.

Again, thanks Tom / Stan / Guys. This radio button function seems to be the best way to go however, now i'm challenged with transfereing all existing data to this new format.

                  I'll figure it out eventually.

Curious, in the case of Radio or Checkbox options, do they have to be active on only logical fields. I'm wondering if a Radi0 or Chkbx can can be applied to a Character field.

                  If checked, value=" "

The example I gave you doesn't represent logical fields. It sets values for a character variable.

Not sure if this works effectively - but I did a quick trial and it seemed to. i simply put a field on a form and made it a checkbox type in the properties. under choice I gave it a value for true - left false blank. I then copied and pasted the field to duplicate it. In the properties I gave it a different value for true and left false blank. When I ran the form and clicked the checkboxes they worked like a radio button. As the field is the same it can only have one value. seems simple but not sure if this is an appropriate work around. It is the way I do it for web forms.

Reading your initial post, I was about to suggest just that..
This in effect turns a check box into radio.
                        Caution:
As a matter of convention, anywhere everywhere anytime all the time, check boxes denote the ability to choose more than one. You will simply confuse the traditionally-minded user by turning a check box collection to a radio button collection. I would be, even though I am no where near traditionally-minded! If I go to a website or any form that has check boxes and by choosing one it eliminate the other, I will wonder: what's wrong with these people? Why can I choose both Vanilla and Chocolate?
