Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table/ field rules/ dropdown list/ lookup problem

I have a problem with a lookup as it would not fill the field with all of the characters that it should have.

I experimented with a couple of tables to see if I could replicate the problem but came up with another issue.

Table1 fields are 16 characters long and table2 are 4 characters.

Table2, field23 has the drop down and I want it to fill field22 with data from table1, field2. Normally, the drop down would be in field22 however as it was not working for me, I decided to try it in field23.

Field22 gets filled and so does field23 however field23 is not on the fill menu other than it has the drop down list.

Field22 values get truncated at 4 characters, however field 23 was not but has since started working???. Initially built with 16 characters and revised to 4.

In my working database, after trying the work around for the problem, the drop down field is set for six characters and nine are showing up. I also have a problem that if I use the table, (not the drop down list), and I try to edit a record, I can not save it. It worked fine a while back but?

I will try and zip the working one and end it out.

Larry, I'm not sure I understand your issue.

However, maybe the attachment will help. I've renamed your tables to remove blank spaces, and I've rearranged the sequence of autofills in the field rule. I set the field width for each source field to the field width in the lookup table structure.

In my own work I have always tried to set the field widths in my transaction tables to match the field widths in my lookup source tables. I don't feel entirely comfortable relying on Alpha to truncate field values when autofilling.

Tom, the problem that I have is that the field rules for drop down list/box were not functioning properly.

I have attached a reduced version of my application which still shows the problem.

The original problem was that I could not save an edit in the drop down list for whatever reason.

I changed to the drop down list box and data will not fill in properly

If you open the form "shop dwg request 3" and enter a job number of 12-3456, on page 1, you get a form with some data filled in.

Add another record by selecting a job 12-345 from the drop down list.
      Several fields get filled in.
Go to the "submittal #" field and try picking 12-345-01. It does not enter into the field. Also, adding or editing a field does not allow you to pick it.

I added a field at the very bottom "Test" that allows you to make the same selection and use it to fill the "submittal # field to prove to myself that there is nothing wrong with the field.

The test field is only 6 characters however it is displaying more than it should.

This is the same form that I am having problems in V10 when I switch between form view and browse view. In V9, I can go back and forth between the two views repeatedly.
In V10, I can go to the browse and when I go back to the form, it opens a blank form. This is happening with all of my forms that are built on a set.

Larry, did my example misbehave on your system?

In my opinion it still does as field23 should not be getting filled in as it is not on the fill in list. It is where the drop down list box happens to reside.

Sorry. I'm now totally confused. It seems you're mistaken. Field23 IS on the Fill list in my example. What aspect of my example is not working correctly?

Tom, I did not check to see that you had changed the fill in fields.

What I was trying to demonstrate in my test version was that if the drop down list box is in field23 it gets filled in with some value even tough it is not on the fill in list.

This would not be the way I would normally structure my form but I came across this while trying to figure out why my working database was acting strange.

why would anyone want to attach a dropdown lookup to a field and NOT use it to fill in that field ? Makes no sense to me. Sorry. I'm still badly confused.

Tom, I have no idea if anyone else would ever want to do it however I did it as I was trying to figure out why my system was not displaying properly and that is how I stumbled upon it.

Does not seem right to me.

                    Larry and Tom,

Have a look at the Alpha Sports Invoice sample. Note how the lookup works for the Invoice Items.

When a Dropdown list box is selected Alpha can remember the Product Id even though it is not displayed and the Description is displayed and can be seen in the table default browse.

If you do not want the lookup to work this way, un-check the box I have shown in the red square.

                    See thumbnail.
                    Regards

Re: table/ field rules/ dropdown list/ lookup problem

Keith, Alpha Sports (product items)appears to be working to allow additions and revisions in the browse mode to the drop down box list the same as what my database is doing.
When you add an item, you have to reopen the drop down list box to actually add it to the table so that solves one of my problems.
One other problem that I am having is that the characters in the field that the drop down box is in does not update correctly when you select a different item from the list.
No problem with Alpha Sports on this item.
