Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime installation only shows tables

My customer tried to install the V10 runtime today. Starting with a Win7 machine.

When he installs and opens his database, he only gets the control panel. And on the CP, only the tables/sets tab is populated. All other tabs are empty though there should be hundreds of forms, reports, scripts, etc. And, the autoexec (which isn't showing up of course) should be loading a custom menu, hiding the CP, etc. anyway.

He does not have any problems when he loads AlphaSports with the same runtime installation.

Before doing any of this he did test the database and its functionality etc. with a Full Developer version of V10. This problem only presented itself when he tried the runtime.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Steve,

This happened to me about a month ago and I uninstalled RT and reinstalled it. It worked the 2nd time around.

Did what Kenn suggested today, no joy, same thing.

Customer did install V10 runtime on an XP machine, no problem.

        What else?

Steve, is the runtime driving a shadow copy of the database, or the live database on the server? I'll bet its the former. If so, what you're seeing is the absence of the dictionaries in the shadow folder. If they're omitted Alpha will create them automatically, but of course they'll be blank. So, you can see the tables but nothing else. If this guess is right, you then need to figure out why the actual dictionaries didn't make it to the local workstation's shadow folder.

THis may shed some light on Steve's problem. I began having problems that when a form was opened, it was opened as if the RT was running and the 'design view' icon was not visible. Close the form with the black 'x' and the app closes. The only way to get to 'design view' mode from 'view' mode is to right click onm the tab at the bottom nest to the control panel tab and select close. From that point on, I could open the form from the CP and the 'design view' icon is visible.

I uninstalled v10 RT and it removed the v10 developer icon from the desktop. I tried to open A5 from the start menu and get this error:

            Error running addin Startup_100_Register_Controls:Could not open OLE Object {80C2583C-A05B-44B8-851E-95B288CA2CDE}
Error running Startup_a5controls:Could not open OLE object a5controls=resources.10'
Error running addin startup_xdialog_context:Could not open OLE object a5contexteval.contexteval.10'

While I can't say for sure, I'm 99.9% sure when RT was installed, it mixed to some degree with the developer edition. Now to reinstall the developer edition.

              Steve,

For what it is worth, when installing to W7 you need full admin rights both for installation and running Runtime for the first time.

Also, beware of Kaspersky AntiVirus 2010, it does some nasty things to .dd* files.

I am the problem customer that is the subject of this thread. After doing a shadow refresh, the runtime did work on the Win 7 machine
