Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    xBasic For Everyone Chapter 58

I'm not sure where to post this question so I'll try here. I searched the forums for an answer but nothing came up. If there's another place that I might get better results with my question please let me know.

I'm a pretty novice user of Alpha Five but I have a project I'm trying to come to grips with that involves a fairly large MySQL database. It has it's own front end but I need to provide some custom reporting capabilities against it and have been trying to increase my knowledge of ways to interface with it.

I have been reading Dr. Peter Wayne's excellent book 'xBasic For Everyone' and have hit a roadblock at Chapter 58 - Upsize your database. The tables referred to in this chapter are not in the sample database. I thought maybe I could convert the similar ones in the sample database but the structure is not the same as the ones referred to in the chapter. Then I thought maybe I could just create my own but there doesn't seem to be enough information to completely recreate them.

I would really like to go through this chapter as it is relevant to what I am trying to accomplish but I am lost without the necessary resources to go with it.

Has anyone else successfully followed along with the last chapter in the book? What did you use for the 4 tables/data needed? I emailed Dr Wayne from the address provided on his website but got no reply.

    Hi Doug,

As not enough of us have got or read Dr. Peter Wayne's book 'xBasic For Everyone', It might help if you could ask your question directly without reference to the book.

      Nice first name ;)

I just looked at my copy as I have not played with the SQL part. In my book, chapter 57 is the upsizing chapter and the first part of it deals with creating the tables with the tools available from MySQL. I would presume that your copy is the same? Or are you missing them?

Dr Wayne goes through creating a script that creates an "instruction file" called CreateTables.txt This file has all the SQL commands in it to re-create the tables in MySQL. The chapter then goes on to creating connection strings with the database and then interacting with it. If you don't have this in your copy, then I would email however you got it from stating your invoice number and I'm sure they can provide you with the necessary section. As it is copyrighted, I can't post it.

Keith, my question relates specifically to the book. The last chapter is a tutorial on exporting a database from Alpha Five, recreating it in MySQL and then working with it. My aim is to follow the tutorial but the scripts won't work without the tables and data in Alpha Five to begin with.

Doug, my copy does have the scripts. It's at the start of Chapter 58 in my book, perhaps a later edition than yours.

The problem with the scripts is that the first one uses 4 tables in an Alpha Five DB and exports them to 4 text files. Those 4 tables are not in the sample database. The second script used to recreate the database in MySQL uses those 4 text files for the structure and data.

Now that I look at the second script a little closer I see that there is enough information there to at least create the tables. I would then just have to add my own data.
